Remember former Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ)? He of the gold bars, the fancy automobiles, the drawers (no, not those drawers) full of cash? He was convicted on July 16, 2024, of bribery, extortion, honest services fraud, obstruction of justice, and conspiracy. His sentence was delayed, presumably so he could attend the trial of his wife, Nadine Menendez.
On Monday, Nadine Menendez was likewise convicted on charges of bribery and conspiracy.
Nadine Menendez was convicted Monday of cooking up a crooked scheme with her disgraced husband — ex-New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez — to pocket gold bars, a Mercedes-Benz and other bribes.
Jurors found the 58-year-old Englewood Cliffs resident guilty of federal bribery and conspiracy charges following about eight hours of deliberations over two days.
It came months after Bob Menendez’s conviction for his role in the sprawling corruption web, in which the couple leveraged his lofty Senate post to line both of their pockets.
The narratives in the case would seem to come straight out of a low-budget movie, or maybe "The Sopranos" - or "Jersey Shore."
Nadine was the “go-between” connecting Bob with businessmen who funneled bribes to them from the Egyptian and Qatari governments, Manhattan federal prosecutors said.
In exchange, the pilloried pol leveraged his powerful post as head of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to lobby colleagues to unfreeze $300 million in Egyptian military aid that had been held up due to human rights concerns, and dole out other valuable favors, jurors heard at a one-month trial.
“What else can the love of my life do for you?” Nadine told one Egyptian official while sitting alongside her cigar-puffing hubby during a May 2019 dinner at Morton’s Steakhouse, evidence revealed.
I'll say this for Bob and Nadine Menendez: it's not a lot of married couples that can not only live but also work together, and still refer to each other in glowing terms like "...the love of my life." Sadly, they won't be housed together in prison.
It was a profitable game while it lasted:
FBI agents who raided the couple’s Englewood Hills home found the luxury car parked in their garage, and more than $150,000 in gold bars stored inside Nadine’s safe. Jurors saw more than $400,000 in cash stuffed into envelopes and strewn across the home, including inside the former senator’s official government windbreaker.
As the bribes poured in from businessmen Uribe, Wael Hana and Fred Daibes, Nadine “put the senator’s power up for sale,” prosecutors said, calling her his “partner in crime.”
Crime may pay for a while, but not forever.

Look, though, beyond the carelessly obvious corruption of Bob and Nadine Menendez. How many members of Congress have grown immensely wealthy on their comparatively modest congressional salaries? How much is Chuck Schumer worth? Nancy Pelosi? The daffy old Bolshevik from Vermont, who owns not one, not two, but three expansive homes? From where do these riches flow? They sure aren't being paid for their charm and good looks.
Sadly, Bob and Nadine Menendez are only the tip of something like an iceberg, except that while it floats, it's not white but brown. Corruption in Washington is as old as politics, and as pervasive as cheap rhetoric.
