Egypt Says They'll Absorb Half a Million Evacuated Gazans

In a surprising turnabout, Egypt's President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has announced that Egypt would temporarily absorb half a million displaced Gazans, with plans to house them in a city in the Sinai Peninsula.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi said that his country was ready to temporarily host half a million Gazans who would be evacuated from the Gaza Strip, according to a Friday report by Hezbollah-affiliated Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar.

According to the report, the Gazans would be allocated a city in the North of the Sinai Peninsula.

The comment reportedly came during a conference held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on the situation in the Middle East, in which the Egyptian leader was present, among other attendees.

According to the report, the temporary relocation offer has raised concerns with Jordan, who has previously taken a strong stance against such a move.

It seems unlikely that Egypt has in mind taking up President Trump on his Gaza reconstruction plan, which he proposed in February.

In early February, US President Donald Trump announced his Gaza relocation plan during a press conference with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House in Washington.

The plan proposed to relocate Gazans to neighboring Arab countries such as Egypt and Jordan and for the United States to take over the Gaza Strip.

Later in February, the US president said he would "recommend" his Gaza plan but would not force it in an interview with Fox News.

But as it happens, Egypt has plans of its own for Gaza, which shares a land border with Egypt - and which remains a trouble spot.

In early March, Egypt announced its $53 billion reconstruction plan for Gaza. The proposal, adopted by the Arab summit, countered that of Trump and rejected the proposal to relocate Palestinians from the Strip.

The proposal would allow Palestinians to remain in Gaza during a five-year phased approach to reconstructing Gaza, with a focus on rebuilding infrastructure, housing, and essential services.

There are several problems with this proposal.

First: There are over two million Gazans, as of 2024; that number may have declined some in the last few months, given all that's been going on, but it's still far more than half a million. If any major infrastructure rebuilding is to happen in Gaza, most, if not all, of the population will be temporarily displaced. How will that work? None of the neighboring Arab/Muslim nations seem to want these people.

Second: How does Egypt intend to rebuild Gaza? Will it be restored as it was, or will there be some modernization, most especially a modern education system to replace the brainwashing mills Hamas ran?

Third: How will Egypt make sure no hidden Hamas fighters are among the displaced? We can presume Egypt doesn't want those people within their borders. But it is unlikely in the extreme that Egypt, or anyone else for that matter, has a comprehensive list of Hamas members.

Fourth and finally: What does Israel have to say about having Egypt come in to rebuild Gaza?

This is, sadly, a part of the world where there are frequently just not many good answers. The people of Gaza have been living under Hamas for almost two decades. A couple of generations of Gazan children have attended schools set up by Hamas, where they were inculcated in hate and antisemitism. Hamas members blend in with the population of Gaza, like piranhas in a school of bait fish, and any "refugees" taken in by Egypt or anyone else are liable to have Hamas fighters or, at least, Hamas sympathizers in their midst.

Add to that the complication that Israel has resumed offensive operations in Gaza and is threatening to annex parts of Gaza unless Hamas releases all of the remaining hostages, and it forces one to wonder if there's any value to Egypt's offer.
