In 2020, the entire world panicked over a virus that was overwhelmingly survivable. The COVID-19 virus led to a major economic downturn, forced business closures, clampdowns on everything from travel to public assembly, mask and vaccine mandates, and trillions in government spending.
Now it's turning out that the vaccines rushed through the evaluation process and into use are having some bad side effects. A recent study of three different COVID-19 vaccines has revealed increased incidents of heart, blood, and brain disorders in those recipients.
COVID vaccines from companies like Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca have been linked to rare occurrences of heart, brain and blood disorders, according to the largest vaccine study to date.
Researchers from the Global Vaccine Data Network analyzed 99 million people who received jabs in eight countries and monitored for increases in 13 medical conditions, Bloomberg News reported.
The study, which was published in the journal Vaccine last week, found the vaccines were linked to a slight spike in neurological, blood and heart-related medical conditions.
Rare cases of myocarditis — inflammation of the heart muscle — were found in the first, second and third doses of Pfizer-BioNTech’s and Moderna’s mRNA vaccines.
Another heart condition, pericarditis, the inflammation of the cardiac muscle, had a 6.9-fold increased risk in those who received a third dose of AstraZeneca’s viral-vector shot, the study found.
The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines depend on messenger RNA (mRNA). mRNA is, normally, part of the transcription process in cells, where genetic material is transcribed and transported to ribosomes, which are essentially cellular factories that produce amino acids and proteins; the mRNA vaccines essentially spoof this process to simulate the spike protein used by viruses to invade cells. While this application has been discussed as a theory for years, the COVID-19 vaccines are the first practical use of this method in a vaccine.

Increased incidents of several specific syndromes were observed in the study:
Researchers observed a “significant increase” in cases of Guillain-Barré syndrome among those who received the AstraZeneca vaccine with 42 days of administration.
They also noted higher-than-expected instances of acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM), inflammation of the brain and spinal cord, among those who received their first dose of Moderna’s vaccine.
However, the study noted that when it came to ADEM there was “no consistent pattern in terms of vaccine or timing following vaccination, and larger epidemiological studies have not confirmed any potential association.”
Both mRNA vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna were associated with instances of myocarditis, inflammation of the heart muscle, which occurred more than was expected in the study, with the condition having a significant observed-to-expected ratio consistently after the first, second and third doses.
Significantly higher than expected cases of pericarditis, inflammation of the sac-like structure that surrounds the heart, were also observed following first and fourth doses of Moderna’s vaccine.
New technologies and treatments always have some unforeseen side effects. The COVID-19 vaccines were initially released by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA), which does not include the same suite of long-term clinical studies required for a normal pharmaceutical release. It is therefore not surprising to see adverse effects that were not anticipated by the results of the pre-release work that was done on these vaccines.
Full disclosure: I have had the Moderna vaccine myself; at the time I was in a business that involved international travel, and it was apparent at that time that many countries were requiring a COVID vaccine for entry. I have not and will not take any boosters, and while I now regret that decision, I can't really undo that, and, at least, I seem to have suffered no ill effect.
There will almost certainly be more research done on the side effects of the COVID-19 vaccines. This entire episode has, however, revealed some other, more disturbing side effects: A disconcerting willingness on the part of many Americans to give in to mandates, lockdowns, and business closures because of a virus that is, like influenza, eminently survivable by all but the elderly and the immune-compromised.
The precedent has now been set, and it's only a matter of time before the usual suspects in the various levels of government try this again.
