We knew that Penny Flanagan winning the Democrat Senate primary in Minnesota on Tuesday was going to yield some campaign trail hilarity, but we didn't know it would start this soon.
Flanagan, as Tim Walz's current lieutenant governor, is a known quantity – and none of it's good. Depending on the day, you might find her wearing a t-shirt condoning violence or donning a hijab to show she's one with the Somali Muslim community.
In short, she's bat-guano crazy.
And although her name makes it sound like she grew up catching leprechauns in Kilkelly, Ireland – and she is part Irish – Flanagan also has Native American heritage. And, boy, is she going to let you know it.
This is highlighted in bold on the main page of her campaign website.
Born into an Indigenous and Irish family, Peggy is Ojibwe and a member of the White Earth Nation. Her Anishinaabe name means “speaks in a loud and clear voice woman.” She has spent her career using her voice with a loud and clear focus on making life better for Minnesotans.
We'll take her word for it, although perhaps we shouldn't.
Eager to start raking in the cash for the general election, where she'll face off against Republican Michele Tafoya, her campaign sent out an email (via the Democratic National Committee (DNC)) Wednesday afternoon with this headline that'll make you do a double-take:
In almost 250 years, there’s never been a Native woman serving in the US Senate.
Wait a second now, you're probably saying to yourself. What about Fauxcahontas? She's been in office for ginwenzh, why doesn't she count?

The whole thing is a hoot.

What's even funnier: Elizabeth Warren endorsed Peggy Flanagan. She obviously made a real big impression.
Once word of the email hit social media, the official Republican X account chimed in with a cheeky, "Has anybody checked on Elizabeth Warren?"
Here's the body of the email sent by the DNC:
[I]n almost 250 years, there’s never been a Native woman serving in the US Senate. It’s time to change that.
I’m Peggy Flanagan, the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate in Minnesota.
I am Ojibwe and a proud member of the White Earth Nation. My family is the Wolf Clan. The mission of my clan is to never leave anyone behind — and that’s been my guiding principle.
I am the descendant of people who were forced off their land onto the White Earth reservation. I am the relative of residential boarding school survivors. I am the daughter of a man who always spoke truth to power for the good of the Anishinaabe people.
I’m thinking of my daughter — who just got her first jingle dress — and whether or not she will see Indigenous women in all parts of our government.
Right now, there are no Native voices in the US Senate. If I win this race, we can change that.
Then came the appeal for money, which she apparently has to split with the DNC.
The email is almost word-for-word the same as a video appeal Flanagan put out in July while the primary was still in progress.
She's going to be beating this drum relentlessly through November – and, hilariously, Elizabeth Warren is the one who will be taking the biggest beating. Figuratively, of course.
Sen. Warren could not be reached for comment.
Editor’s Note: The 2026 Midterms will determine the fate of President Trump’s America First agenda. Republicans must maintain control of both chambers of Congress.
