'Discriminatory Treatment of American Products' Prompts Trump's Latest Tariff Move Against Canada

On Monday, President Donald Trump took action against what the administration calls "discriminatory treatment of American products" by Canada.

Trump signed three tariff-related Proclamations which will "impose additional 50% tariffs on certain goods" that come from Canada. These are moves that the White House indicated are "offsetting the burden and disadvantage on U.S. commerce from Canada’s discriminatory treatment of U.S. commerce" and which are "leveling the playing field for crucial American exports—cars, alcohol, and dairy."

Townhall Senior Washington correspondent Cameron Arcand spoke to senior administration officials who told him that Canada was one of two countries (the other was China) that "retaliated" against the president's trade policy early on in his second term, and that they were being "held accountable" for it:

"For example, one of the things that has happened is that all the two Canadian provinces and territories have halted the purchase, distribution, or retailing of U.S. alcoholic beverages, but they have not imposed similar restrictions on other countries," the official added. "A second example is that Canada imposes certain tariffs and quotas on cars imported to Canada from the United States. But not on imports from other countries. Canada also administers the quota in a way that compels U.S. auto companies to invest in production in Canada instead of the United States."
However, other products like fish, energy and critical minerals are expected to be outlined as exceptions, according to the officials.

The White House fact sheet indicated as much:
