Like most Republican leaders who are especially good at what they do, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has been on the receiving end of myriad hit pieces against him over the years, with one of the more amusing ones being the infamous "pudding incident" where a supposed journalist actually documented an alleged moment where DeSantis ate pudding with three fingers in front of other people.
There have been the far more serious ones, too, that turned out to be nothingburgers - like the "60 Minutes" "pay to play/racism" hit piece on DeSantis and Publix over their coronavirus vaccine distribution in 2021, a story that got debunked in short order by DeSantis and even some high-profile Florida Democrats who were involved in the coordination of the distribution plan.
But though DeSantis has faced a persistent barrage of media criticism at the national level, his media critics in Florida have been far more unrelenting, with the Miami Herald being at the top of that chain - even going so far as to use disgraced and thoroughly discredited former Florida Health Dept. IT staffer Rebekah Jones in their ongoing campaign to Get Something™ on DeSantis.
Every once in a while, though, hell does indeed freeze over, which is exactly what happened Wednesday when the Herald of all places decided to sprinkle some praise on DeSantis over his executive order authorizing flight rescues of stranded Americans out of Israel.
From their editorial, which did include one shot at their most hated politico because of course it did:
Hamas attacks were personal in South Florida. DeSantis’ swift action pays off
The ties between South Florida and Israel run deep. As we watched in horror Israelis being murdered and kidnapped last weekend, Gov. Ron DeSantis did the right thing afterward.
On Sunday night, 270 evacuees landed at Tampa International Airport, the result of an executive order DeSantis signed on Thursday to charter flights for Florida residents stranded in Israel. Another flight carrying seven people landed in Orlando earlier in the day.
DeSantis, who’s running for president, and his wife greeted the evacuees in Tampa, where they shook hands posed for photos.
Hostages taken
The Herald Editorial Board has criticized DeSantis for exploiting politically fraught moments, as he did with the Southern border crisis when he flew migrants to Martha’s Vineyard. This time, however, the governor’s actions have real consequences and benefits for Floridians and Americans caught up in the unprecedented attacks by Hamas, which the United States rightly labels a terrorist organization. The group murdered entire families, children the elderly and music festival goers, hunted down and executed in cold blood. Almost 200 others were taken hostage, the Israeli military said Monday.
Though he'll never get the Miami Herald's endorsement (nor does he want it, I figure), in my opinion, it says something else good about the Florida Governor when even his most vocal critics can't help but give him credit for some of the things he does.
