As we previously reported, Gisele Fetterman – wife of Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) – recently announced on the Twitter machine that she and their kids proceeded to pack up and “run away” to Canada and Buffalo for a vacation.
Under normal circumstances, that would be pretty run-of-the-mill news not worth much of a mention. But in this particular instance it struck many as rather odd and insensitive considering she indicated she and her kids got in the car and drove away from Washington, D.C. right around the time Sen. Fetterman checked himself into Walter Reed Army Medical Center to get treated for depression.
It was the second time in two weeks he had been hospitalized, with the first one being after he reportedly felt “lightheaded” during a Senate Democrat retreat. During his first hospital trip, he was said to have been monitored for a “seizure.”
“I am not really sure how to navigate this journey but am figuring it out slowly,” Gisele Fetterman announced in a mini-Twitter thread. “1 week ago today when the news dropped, the kids were off from school and media trucks circled our home. I did the first thing I could think of…pack them in the car and drive.”
Worse, she revealed all this a week after she demanded everyone “respect” the family’s privacy.
For many, Mrs. Fetterman’s tweets were just further confirmation of her apparent need to be the center of all the attention (and co-Senator) despite the fact that it’s her husband who is the actual elected figure.
But for Washington Post reporter Colby Itkowitz, Fetterman’s tweets represented something much different. In a since-deleted tweet response posted on Friday, Itkowitz wrote, “May we all handle the inevitable hard times with this much grace and clarity.”

Excuse me, but how is it demonstrating “grace and clarity” to grab the kids and rush off to do some sightseeing and ziplining hundreds of miles away when your spouse, who went through a debilitating stroke nearly a year ago but still stayed in the Senate race at the urging of his family and fellow Democrats, has just been hospitalized for the second time in the month?
Answer: It’s most certainly not, which is likely not something Itkowitz realized when she deleted her tweet. Her deleting it probably had more to do with the shocked reactions of other Twitter users who did not view Mrs. Fetterman running away from her husband so soon after he checked into a hospital as anything close to showing “grace and clarity.” More like selfishness and callousness.
I mean maybe she could have waited a couple of weeks if she wanted to take the kids away from all the media attention?
People really tell on themselves on Twitter sometimes, and that was certainly the case in this instance, not just with Mrs. Fetterman but also with Colby Itkowitz, who further confirmed to the paper’s numerous critics that the Washington Post is little more than a mouthpiece for Democrats.
