A variety of Democrats assembled in Montgomery, Alabama, on Saturday for the “All Roads Lead to the South” rally to voice their opposition to the newly redrawn congressional map in Alabama.
Among the speakers was Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY-14), who railed against the Republicans' redistricting wins.

“It is time for the North to pull up to the South...and let them know exactly what they have uncorked with this injustice. They think they can draw us out of power. They do not know the sleeping giant that they just awakened."
"What they thought was the final blow is actually just the opening silo," AOC declared.
Now that might sound like a bold proclamation.
Except first, she didn't appear to understand the term "opening salvo," instead saying "opening silo." If you don't understand your "opening salvo," then you may not truly understand the fight. She has national ambitions, as she shows by the visit, but she just keeps showing she isn't up to the challenge.
Is she opening a missile silo in the South? Her statement sounded like violent, inciting "North-South" language.
But then, second, Ocasio-Cortez didn't seem to understand how her remarks were inherently hypocritical. Democrats have been gerrymandering for years. She speaks of the North — the Northeast is gerrymandered to the hilt. Trying to find Republican representation is like trying to find Waldo. So Democrats don't have a leg to stand on in making this argument.
The "sleeping giant" that may have been awakened is the Republicans finally deciding to fight back in the redistricting battle. Democrats are upset, not because of race, but because they may lose power. And Republicans are beating them at their own game, winning in the redistricting battle, which could give the GOP some critical seats going into the midterms.
Then, too, as someone who joined the many leaving the Northeast for the South (in my case, Texas), I can say it's because it's economically better and frankly, less oppressive than the North because of its governmental policies. That flight, by myself and many others, is also leading to changes in the maps, But rather than rectifying those policies, Democrats just seem to double down on them.
People had thoughts.

AOC is correct about one thing - New York is pulling up to the south...in U-Hauls. https://t.co/WA5KPBpMd3

Well, in my case, a big moving truck. But you get the point.
The opening “silo:”

When a kooky rep from one of the most gerrymandered states in the country - surrounded by even more gerrymandered states in the northeast - threatens to go to the South to yell at them for following the law banning racial gerrymandering.
Good luck. https://t.co/wQ1XjSXTPG
