What the Heck: There's a Petition on Behalf of Illegal Alien Trucker Accused of Vehicular Homicides

Sometimes people do things that make you wanna say, "Huh?"

I think the news about a petition on behalf of Harjinder Singh, the illegal alien accused in three charges of vehicular homicide in Florida, might just fall under that "huh?"

Harjinder Singh, 28, faces three charges of vehicular homicide and up to 45 years in prison after he allegedly pulled an illegal U-turn on the Florida Turnpike on Aug. 12 while driving a tractor trailer — six years after he entered the US illegally.

Since his arrest in California, 2.2 million people have signed a Change.org petition calling for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to commute Singh’s sentence if he gets convicted.

“This was a tragic accident — not a deliberate act. While accountability matters, the severity of the charges against him does not align with the circumstances of the incident,” the petition reads.

The petition has reached almost 2.5 million, with many appearing to be Indian, according to the NY Post.

"The severity of the charges against him does not align with the circumstance of the incident," it says. What? Three people died.

While the petition acknowledges there should be some punishment [if he were convicted], the petition also says:

"Consider alternative sentencing options, such as restorative justice measures, counseling, or community service, aligning with both accountability and compassion."

Now, first, no one has been convicted yet of anything. The petition calls on Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and the Florida Board of Executive Clemency "to re-examine and reduce the sentence." There's nothing to "re-examine." We don't even know what the sentence would be if he were convicted, so these people are off to the races without knowing all the facts and what will happen.

There appears to be spamming of the petition with the same comment, with the same grammatical errors.

It was an accident. he made a terrible mistake, not a deliberate choice to harm anyone. He was working hard to support his family, like so many of us, and one wrong decision changed everything. A 45-year prison sentence is not justice

There were also many similar comments in the petition, pleading to cut the man a break.

Some people on X couldn't believe that that there were that many people who would sign the petition.

The greater issue regarding safety also prompted questions about visas and requirements for foreign drivers, as well as how requirements were being applied across the country. Secretary of State Marco Rubio halted all worker visas for commercial truck drivers, as we reported.

We'll have to see how this case ultimately shakes out. I think we can rely on Gov. Ron DeSantis to stick to the law in any action regarding this case.
