Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, Planned Parenthood recorded its highest number of abortions and largest amount of taxpayer funding to date in 2020. Planned Parenthood continues to record an alarming increase in abortions and U.S. tax dollars year after year. 2020 was no different, setting new record highs (or as we should be looking at it, devastating lows) for the third straight year.
Planned Parenthood – the nation’s largest abortion provider – recently released its 2019-2020 report revealing that COVID-19 has been no threat to the abortion business. We told you how Planned Parenthood fought to keep its abortion clinics open during the pandemic, claiming that it was significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and that subsequent lockdowns resulted in less access to its abortion services. The data shows this is not the case.
In fact, Planned Parenthood has once again set the ignominious record for the most abortions in a single year. Planned Parenthood’s annual report revealed that it committed a startling 354,871 abortions. Despite claiming women had little access to “reproductive health care,” AKA abortion, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the abortion giant managed to commit 9,199 more abortions than the previous year.
Revenues for Planned Parenthood also soared during 2020. Not only did Planned Parenthood capitalize on providing the largest number of abortions in their history, but they also raked in the largest amount of your tax dollars along the way. Hardly short on cash, Planned Parenthood received another $618.1 million in taxpayer funding. That’s $1,300,000.00 in taxpayer dollars more than the last record-setting year. Of course, to put that in perspective, that’s a little less than one more day’s worth of your money than it took the year before; so maybe this was just Planned Parenthood enjoying a leap year bonus from you, the taxpayer.
But one thing is sadly clear, despite its public complaints, taxpayer funding for Planned Parenthood continues to climb, resulting in increasing profits year over year.
Planned Parenthood benefited not only from receiving an increase in taxpayer dollars, it also greatly benefited from the CARES Act. Congress passed the CARES Act to give relief to small businesses financially impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The CARES Act did not provide direct funding to Planned Parenthood – in fact, it specifically excluded large businesses like Planned Parenthood – yet as we reported, 37 of Planned Parenthood’s affiliates somehow managed to receive approximately $80 MILLION (something that is likely to surface in next year’s report).
So, an additional $80 million was added to this abortion giant’s war chest, on top of the highest amount of tax dollars ever received in 2019-2020. Unlike millions of other businesses and citizens, it’s hard to believe Planned Parenthood struggled in any fashion during the COVID-19 pandemic.
While Planned Parenthood didn’t struggle to commit abortions, it did struggle to keep up the façade of providing other “services.”
Planned Parenthood continues to deceive as it disguises its abortion practice with claims that it also provides a variety of other services, such as adoption, prenatal, and well-woman services. This claim proves to be less true every year. From its latest report, it’s clear that non-abortion services are not a priority to Planned Parenthood. In the last year, several non-abortion services decreased, with some of the services drastically dropping by upwards of 35%.
Specifically, Planned Parenthood disingenuously touts its adoption referrals, but it cut the service by nearly 40% in a single year. In 2018-2019, Planned Parenthood reported an abysmally low 4,279 adoption referrals (compared to more than 345,000 abortions); and in 2019-2020, that number dropped to a mere 2,667 adoption referrals (down 37%). At this rate, it’s hard to imagine that this will even be a service provided in the next two to three years. Adoption referrals were not the only non-abortion service to decrease this past year. Other services that suffered include well-woman, prenatal, miscarriage, and family practice services – services meant to increase the overall health of women in general.
Well-woman exams decreased by nearly 5,000 exams, from 213,042 to 208,248 (down 2.25%). Prenatal services decreased from 9,789 to 8,626 (down 11.88%) (and remember based on our previous analyses, this is likely barely more than 1,400 prenatal clients, as Planned Parenthood conducts roughly 6 prenatal services per client). Miscarriage services also decreased from 2,236 to 2,110 (down 6.64%) from the previous year. Family practice services also decreased from 34,075 to 31,912 (down 6.35%).
The decrease in non-abortion services is not a one-time event. This has been and continues to be an alarming trend over the past decade. Over the past 10 years, contraceptive services have steadily decreased from 3,868,901 in 2009 to 2,565,910 in 2019-2020 (down 33.68% in the last decade).
Cancer screenings have also decreased substantially. In 2009, Planned Parenthood reported 1,830,811 screenings. In 2019-2020, they reported 598,852 screenings (down 67.29% in the last decade). It’s clear from the data that Planned Parenthood is not prioritizing women’s health and is merely in the business of generating profits from its abortion clinics.
Let’s look at this another way. In the last reported year, Planned Parenthood committed MORE ABORTIONS than it performed Breast exams, Colposcopy procedures, Cryotherapy procedures, HPV vaccinations, Genital warts (HPV) treatments, Female sterilization procedures, Prenatal services, Miscarriage services, and Adoption referrals COMBINED.
Planned Parenthood can attempt to deceive the American people by disguising their practices as furthering women’s health. What it can’t do, however, is disguise the cold, hard facts.
And the facts show that it took a record amount of our tax dollars and committed a record number of abortions, all while complaining about how it needs more, Planned Parenthood still finished the year with a whopping $69.7 million in profits. Or if you want to break it down, that’s just about $200 in pure profits for each and every life it unceremoniously snuffed out.
Planned Parenthood profits from lies and abortions as it bilks the American taxpayer. And it’s time for this evil to end.
The ACLJ will continue to fight against the largest abortion business out there. Despite the challenges we face under the pro-abortion Biden Administration, which we told you is already working to send another $60 million to Planned Parenthood, and a Left-controlled House and Senate, we won’t give up. We have exposed Planned Parenthood’s deceptions before and we will continue to do so. The data speaks for itself. The trajectory of Planned Parenthood is clear—taking the lives of more unborn babies while taking more money out of YOUR pocket to do so.
We truly care about women’s health and the lives of the unborn. Planned Parenthood is the number one threat to unborn children, and it preys on women in their darkest hour of need. That is why it is so important we continue our work to defund Planned Parenthood and protect pro-life pregnancy centers that genuinely care for and help women and babies in need. We can continue to be a voice for the voiceless, but we need YOU.
