Austin Mayor Steve Adler is concerned for the health and safety of his constituents. So much so that he repeatedly warns Austinites about the dangers of resuming normal activities. Adler has been a staunch advocate of COVID restrictions, begging people before Thanksgiving to stay home to save lives. The Austin Health Authority even issued a statement saying “it’s important that we drive the (COVID-19) numbers down in advance of Thanksgiving.”
Adler agreed, and just ahead of Thanksgiving he posted a video to his Facebook page once again encouraging Austinites to stay home, avoid travel and forgo Thanksgiving with family in the name of safety. He suggested that Austin may have to close again if people did not comply.
What he did not disclose is that he sent the message from his family timeshare in Cabo San Lucas.
In case you’re not a big geography fan…that’s in Mexico.
In an exclusive report, The Statesman reveals that recently Adler hosted an outdoor wedding for his daughter with at least 20 guests.
In early November, as health officials warned of a impending COVID-19 spike, Austin Mayor Steve Adler hosted an outdoor wedding and reception with 20 guests for his daughter at a trendy hotel near downtown.
The next morning, Adler and seven other wedding attendees boarded a private jet for Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, where they vacationed for a week at a family timeshare.
One night into the trip, Adler addressed Austin residents in a Facebook video: “We need to stay home if you can. This is not the time to relax. We are going to be looking really closely. … We may have to close things down if we are not careful.”
In hosting the wedding and traveling internationally, Adler said he broke neither his own order nor those by Gov. Greg Abbott.
But at the time, the city was recommending people not gather in groups of more than 10, and, the day after Adler’s departure, Austin’s health authority warned that “it’s important that we drive the (COVID-19) numbers down in advance of Thanksgiving.”
The mischievous mayor issued the same kind of lame mea culpa that other pro-lockdown Democrat politicians have been issuing after getting caught ignoring their own directives.
On Wednesday, after the American-Statesman reported about Adler’s activities, he apologized.
“I regret this travel,” he said in a statement. “My fear is that this travel, even having happened during a safer period, could be used by some as justification for risky behavior. In hindsight, and even though it violated no order, it set a bad example for which I apologize.”
Of course it is never a violation when they violate their own rules and demands. They aren’t ever apologetic about being elitist hypocrites, they’re just sad that they might give other people permission to be elitist hypocrites.
When all is said and done, the real story of the COVID-19 pandemic will be the hypocrisy of the ruling class and how their arrogance was stripped naked and put on display by their very own hubris. People like Adler and Newsom and Nancy Pelosi genuinely believe that their lives are more important than ours. They genuinely believe that they love differently, laugh differently, experience joy differently than we poor, petty plebes.
Not a one deserves to work in politics again.
