Democrat CA Governor Gavin Newsom finally made remarks, through his spokesperson, on the violence outside a Turning Point USA event at the University of California, Berkeley, this week that resulted in multiple arrests.

In a statement on Wednesday, Newsom's spokesperson told Fox News Digital that "Violence is not a legitimate exercise of First Amendment rights. While people have the right to protest, it must be done peacefully."

As RedState's Jennifer Oliver O'Connell reported, the TPUSA event was the last of the rebranded "This is Turning Point" tour, which was previously scheduled before TPUSA co-founder Charlie Kirk was killed by an assassin on September 10, while speaking to thousands of college kids on the campus of Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah.

The event included Dr. Frank Turek and comedian Rob Schneider.

O'Connell wrote:

Despite the threats, intimidation, and a pre-programmed protest, the event was a sold-out success. Hours ahead of the scheduled start time, Antifa brought their best and brightest to cause chaos, confusion, and discourage people from attending the event.

Attendees were harassed by members of Antifa, who "brought flares, smoke bombs, broken glass and other dangerous paraphernalia to throw at the attendees," O'Connell added.

Check out some of the videos of the insanity that was anything but peaceful.

The post above reads:

This happened to fellow attendees, too. It made no sense, and no one could give a straight answer.

Outside, protesters screamed, vandalized, threw paint, and multiple people were arrested. Glass bottles/cups were launched at attendees. This was not "peaceful protest." It was intimidation. I have never seen anything like it before.

Through all of it, @TPUSA president, @johnpaulleon27, stayed calm and professional. He pushed through bureaucratic resistance and delivered a strong speech, even when the university administration made it as difficult as possible until minutes before.

Tonight proved something simple: You don't have to agree with us. You don't have to like what we say. But shutting down speech, blocking access, attacking attendees, and using this kind of "power" to silence students is not democracy. It's censorship with a smile.

We showed up. We stood firm. We exercised the First Amendment in a place that claims to celebrate free expression. The irony writes itself.

As @RobSchneider best put it, "Shame on you, @UCBerkeley."

RedState later reported that Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon had lowered the boom against Berkeley regarding its handling of the violence.

"The @CivilRights Division, under @AGPamBondi's leadership, has asked UC Berkeley Police to preserve all records regarding their response to the mob violence at UC Berkeley's TPUSA event," the post on X read. "Every American has the right to speak at and attend events without fear."

Newsom is going to have to do more than provide this spokesperson statement when he gets back from his trip to Brazil. We will bring it to you when he does.
