My wife and I were in Bend, Oregon, last year to visit with relatives and to see a concert. Jason Aldean was the main attraction. I admit that before he recorded and released “Try That in a Small Town,” I hadn’t listened to his music. The concert was a lot of fun.
When Aldean mentioned that his next stop was Portland, there was a loud and sustained booing from the crowd. Aldean was a bit surprised, but it reflected the political “mood” of the crowd, and that Bend, Oregon, and specifically country music fans, are not aligned with the leftist politics in Portland. The concert was well before the 2024 election, and he suggested that he was voting for Trump. That got a loud cheer.
One can expect rockers to burn bridges and announce their hatred for Trump and label everyone on the right a “fascist.” It’s part of the brand. Yes, there are rockers on the right, but not a lot will announce it, and most of the latter know that announcing that they are aligned with tradition and conservatism will alienate everyone left of center.
Country music has traditionally been, well, more traditional and conservative. More people have embraced the genre who are not red-conservative, but most people who listen to country music and play country music tend to be conservative or lean conservative. In short, the “base” leans into “red, white, and blue” values. And they don't take to being lectured, either.
When the Dixie Chicks decided to go on tour to sing songs and bash George Bush as a war criminal and an authoritarian, they burned their careers mostly to the ground. Sure, there were some “new fans,” but they lost a whole lot of old ones.
Country music now has a new Dixie Chicks. Zach Bryan has decided that "ICE is gonna bust down your door." Apparently, he’s released a new song titled “Bad News”.

Here is a “teaser” video:
The lyrics aren’t terribly inventive or interesting – but I guess he’s telling us that America is bad because cops are enforcing laws? Here's a sample from the song (profanity alert):
I heard the cops came
Cocky motherf****** ain’t they
ICE gonna bust down your door
Try to build a house no one builds no more
But I got a telephone
Kids are all scared and all alone
Oof. The lyrics are bad, so maybe, just maybe, that's the reason for the song's title?
A better title would have been "Burning Down the House!" but that's been taken by Talking Heads.
Yeah, Zach – I'm thinking that you will gain some support from the left (maybe he's dating a nose-ringer), but I think he's Dixie Chicking his career. It's hard to get fans back who feel betrayed, but maybe Bryan thinks he's taking a stand, or something. Best of luck, sir. Prepare to be booed like you're Portland.
Editor’s Note: The Schumer Shutdown is here. Rather than put the American people first, Chuck Schumer and the radical Democrats forced a government shutdown for healthcare for illegals. They own this.
