We now know who California Gov. Gavin Newsom's retained to represent him in an alleged federal criminal investigation, and the name will surprise no one.
During an unrelated press conference on Tuesday, Newsom confirmed that he and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, retained Abbe Lowell, who previously represented Hunter Biden and Letitia James, among other prominent Democrats.
Sacramento political journalist Ashley Zavala reported that sources told her earlier this month that Newsom had retained Lowell, but Lowell's firm has not responded to the station's "repeated request for comment since July 9."

Newsom announced in mid-June that he and his wife were the targets of a federal criminal probe and lamented that their friends, family, and former employees were being door-knocked by federal investigators and asked about the Newsoms' business interests and transactions. Of course, Newsom left out the fact that many of their close friends and family members are also involved in their business dealings, including Gavin's sister, who runs Plumpjack, and his best friend's wife, who handles his blind trust. As of Tuesday, neither Newsom nor his wife has received subpoenas or been contacted by federal investigators.
Hunter Biden appeared on Gavin Newsom's podcast a few weeks ago, and the two discussed Hunter's legal troubles and his plea deal. Maybe Hunter recommended Lowell to Newsom?
