Death Toll Climbs to 4 in Attack on LDS Church in Michigan, Unknown Number of Congregants Unaccounted For

Authorities in Michigan presented limited updates on the attack on the LDS Church in Grand Blanc during a brief press conference on Sunday night.

  • Four people are confirmed dead; two died as a result of gunshot wounds, and two bodies were later found at the church.
  • One person is in critical condition, and seven more in stable condition.
  • There are an unknown number of congregants still missing.
  • FBI is now the lead agency, and the incident is being investigated as an act of targeted violence.
  • Additional bomb threats are ongoing; some targeted locations were also churches.
  • It's believed that the shooter used an accelerant, likely gasoline, then set the church ablaze.
  • Suspected explosive devices were located, but there's no evidence that they were used to start the fire.
  • The original 911 call came in at 10:25 A.M., and the shooter was neutralized at 10:33 A.M.
  • The shooter, 40-year-old Thomas Jacob Sanford, is an Iraq War veteran who has a son with a congenital hyperinsulinism.
