Disney Leads Studios for Most LGBT Content Created In 2022

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) organization released its yearly "Studio Responsibility Index" which tracks the amount of LGBT content created by a studio every year. Perhaps unsurprisingly, GLAAD found that the family media company Disney stands at the top for 2022.

On GLAAD's website, President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis noted a few interesting statistics in her message about the list, including that LGBT films have increased dramatically. Ellis claims GLAAD is the largest reason behind this growth:

Over the last decade, the percentage of LGBTQ-inclusive films grew by 50 percent, or 1.5 times, in large part due to GLAAD’s annual study, alongside work with studio leadership and creatives.

We know that the stories told in those films have been an inextricable part of a culture-shift seen and experienced by the LGBTQ community with support for LGBTQ people and acceptance at an all-time high. More people are now empowered to live authentically and openly; 1 in 5 members of Gen Z are LGBT per Gallup. MRI-Simmons polling found that LGBTQ-inclusive entertainment is important to over 2 in 5 of all American adults. Their July 2023 study showed that half of American adults say they like to see transgender or nonbinary characters in film and TV, and 42 percent of American adults agree it is important to them that the content they watch include characters who represent the LGBTQ community.

Hollywood has accelerated acceptance for LGBTQ people worldwide with stories including Blockers, Love, Simon, Booksmart, Strange World, Bros, Fire Island, Anything’s Possible, and many more.

It should be noted that despite being listed by Ellis as proof of GLAAD's success, Disney's Strange World and Bros were both movies that flopped heavily in theaters. Disney lost $100 million on Strange World and Bros flopped due to what some say was its over-reliance on homosexual displays that even the LGBT community didn't show up for and its hyper-political promotion by creator Billy Eichner.

According to GLAAD, Disney achieved a "good" rating (the highest being excellent but no studio has achieved this rating) having released 59 films in 2022, and of those films, 24 featured LGBT inclusivity.

Other studios with the "good" rating include A24 and NBCUniversal. Perhaps surprisingly Apple TV+ achieved a "poor" rating while Sony Pictures Entertainment and Warner Bros. Discovery both achieved "insufficient" ratings.

While GLAAD might be patting Disney on the back, the customers don't seem to be interested. While Disney might be increasing its LGBT inclusion and checking boxes at activist organizations, the company has been bleeding monetarily due to poor box office receptions and Disney+ subscribers dropping off, costing the company billions.

Disney's had to undergo massive layoffs and seems to be looking to sell off television properties as well. There are even rumors that the company may end up selling to Apple.

While there are many reasons for Disney to lose customers, including flooding the market with releases and exhausting customers, it can't be denied that socio-political adherence has alienated a solid chunk of Disney's base. Disney CEO Bob Iger even recently stated that he wants to steer Disney away from the culture war as it's not doing the company any favors. The question is whether or not he'll be able to succeed in this given Disney's reported long-time internal bias toward leftist political ideals.

Disney's alienation of a solid chunk of Americans has clearly cost it, but they can at least celebrate knowing GLAAD thinks they're great, at least for the time being.
