Like most of us by now, Texas Representative Dan Crenshaw has watched the drama surrounding Dallas salon owner Shelley Luther and has some harsh words for people who put her in jail.

Luther opened up her Salon, defying lockdown orders and causing the law to come after her. As my colleague Nick Arama reported earlier Wednesday, a Dallas county judge attempted to make an example of her, telling her that she’d spend a week in jail unless she admits that what she did was wrong and apologized.

Luther responded that she did what she did because broke stylists were trying to feed their children and needed to work, and while she didn’t want to be in this position, she will not feel badly about feeding children and refused to close the salon.

Crenshaw took to Twitter to voice his disgust for the events that unfolded.

“These punishments are NOT just. They are not reasonable. Small-minded “leaders” across the country have become drunk with power. This must end,” Crenshaw tweeted.

Crenshaw is correct here. It’s clear that the judge wasn’t handing down a just sentence to Luther. Not only are they trying to make an example of what could happen to those who defy the lockdown order with this sentence, but it’s also being carried out simply because Luther refused to bow down to abusive authority.

Dallas county has been struggling with authoritarian leaders since the lockdown began. Dallas County Commissioner Judge Clay Jenkins has attempted to do everything from extend the lockdown and instituting orders around wearing masks in public, to shuttering stores like Hobby Lobby who provide materials to make masks for no apparent reason…aside from the obvious ones. County commissioners voted to strip Jenkins of his unilateral powers and all decisions must now be voted on by the commissioners.
