As many were aware, Fox News personality Greg Gutfeld made a rare appearance on network television last Thursday when he was invited to be on “The Tonight Show” with Jimmy Fallon. This announcement sent tremors through the entertainment industry, one that was still grappling with the shock of CBS's July cancellation of "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert." First, they lose one of their premier leftist voices in late-night, and now a dreaded conservative sullies their hallowed airspace!
Despite the gasping, fainting couch dispatches about what this appearance might do to fracture the foundations of late-night, it led to a windfall for Fallon. The ratings are in, and Gutfeld’s appearance meant that “The Late Show” saw its best ratings for this entire year. Fallon saw 1.7 million viewers tuning in the night, his largest audience of 2025. This marks over 50 percent higher than his running average of 1.1 million viewers.
What was possibly revealing for those who tuned in was that Greg Gutfeld was not seen as a contemptuous conservative monster, as he and Fallon had a buoyant, largely politics-free discussion as they laughed together. The closest they came was during discussions of Greg’s game show on Fox Nation, “What Did I Miss?”, when they chatted about the format of challenging people with questions on the news after they were sequestered for three months, and they both cracked up how this was a severe challenge for the contestants in the era of Donald Trump.
What people saw with this visit was the ability of two people of differing socio-political backgrounds managing to have a normal discussion and getting along, without the expected intemperate sniping at each other. How about that – people can be normal in mixed company? Who knew?!

But the press could not tolerate this normalcy.
The very fact that there was consternation at a noted member from the reviled community of people who reside on the starboard side of the center explained so much that is wrong with the late-night sector and the entertainment realm in general. These were voices openly declaring, unintentionally, that their products are reserved for only one side of the political and social spectrum. How DARE Greg Gutfeld invade their territory!
The reactions were rather precious. Fallon was accused of sucking up, as New York Magazine’s vertical Vulture declared he was “kissing the conservative ring. “Greg Gutfeld, host of Fox News’s wildly popular late-night show 'Gutfeld!' was featured on the show as a guest, yukking it up with Fallon like the pair were old pals.” Apparently, that was…a problem?
At The Cut, they expressed similar dismay, as Julia Reinstein was clearly bothered by the fact that Gutfeld and Fallon got along, all while not delving into divisive political talk. “In case you were wondering, no, Fallon didn’t ask anything all that substantive of the guy who recently suggested conservatives reclaim the word ‘Nazi’. Also not discussed: the recent cancellation of Stephen Colbert’s Late Show, news that Donald Trump celebrated in the same Truth Social post in which he praised Gutfeld.”
This is the assessment of the learned media class. People are supposed to revile anyone on the right by rote, and to see someone not from their approved political realm appearing on an entertainment sector without their approval is cause for acidic reactions and contempt.
Keep in mind, these are the same people who have been trying to insist that Colbert is one of the even-handed down-the-middle hosts on late-night, yet now they turn bitter that an unapproved figure encroached on their kingdom. Small wonder why the decidedly politicized late-night realm has been withering over the past decade.
