Aftershocks Continue for the Media Over Tapper Book As George Clooney Unravels His Biden Comments

Townhall Media

Currently, we are seeing the press going through a collective therapy couch session in attempting to spin themselves out of being culpable for the lack of coverage on Joe Biden’s mental condition over the last few years. The spark for this reaction is the impending release of the book “Original Sin” by (labeled) journalists Jake Tapper (CNN) and Alex Thompson (Axios). The desperate reactions have been a mix of them appearing amusing and pathetic.

After an excerpt from the book was made available to the New Yorker, the media have been gnawing on a few choice items that were revealed, such as the plan tabled inside the White House at one time that President Silver Alert might need a wheelchair to finish a second term. But one thing that has really lit up the press is a Hollywood connection that had a klieg light shined on it.

As Bob Hoge covered previously, George Clooney had a revealing segment where it was explained, at the famed Hollywood fundraiser held between the G7 Summit and the presidential debate, that President Biden was unaware who Clooney was. This was described as something that deeply affected the actor:

“Clooney felt a knot form in his stomach as the president approached him,” the authors wrote of the embarrassing encounter. When Biden reached Clooney, the aide gently reminded the president of the star’s name — despite the pair having known each other personally for two decades.

“It was obvious to many standing there that the president did not know who George Clooney was,” the authors wrote, according to an excerpt obtained by The Post. “Clooney was shaken to his core. The president hadn’t recognized him. A man he had known for years.”

Clooney later wrote an op-ed for the New York Times, regarded by some as possibly the fulcrum that ultimately got Joe Biden wedged off the Democratic ticket. Now it seems unlikely that Clooney was the main force for that political change, but he served as a visible mouthpiece that would sway the public over to the move that had already been decided behind closed doors. The party leaders made up their minds to remove Joe; Clooney was there to convince Democrat voters that this was a good idea.

In that op-ed, the actor wrote:

We are not going to win in November with this president. On top of that, we won’t win the House, and we’re going to lose the Senate. This isn’t only my opinion; this is the opinion of every senator and congress member and governor that I’ve spoken with in private. We can put our heads in the sand and pray for a miracle in November, or we can speak the truth.

Few would disagree with this assessment. However, for many Americans, this had long been a realization already. This was the Democrat Party coming to terms with a reality they could no longer deny, and – more importantly – one they could no longer hide. There was a cynicism that was in place within the party up to that time, and it was exposed in another passage from Clooney’s editorial:

But the one battle he cannot win is the fight against time. None of us can. It’s devastating to say it, but the Joe Biden I was with three weeks ago at the fund-raiser was not the Joe “big F-ing deal” Biden of 2010. He wasn’t even the Joe Biden of 2020. He was the same man we all witnessed at the debate.

It speaks volumes that George Clooney did not come out with his bold words and stern position as a result of what he had witnessed in Los Angeles in June 2024. As he admits here, his call for Biden to be replaced wasn't seen until after the debate disaster took place. That means he, and those politicians he was in contact with at the time, were going forward with keeping a doddering and fading figure on the ticket, banking on his name to draw enough votes.

And as we know, there was never a consideration of having the president step down from a position for which he was showing signs of being beyond his operational abilities. Even as Clooney alludes to the reality that the man in question was no longer there (“stop telling us that 51 million people didn’t see what we just saw”), leaving him in place was the path forward. This was because whoever was pulling the levers in the administration had six more months of autopen policy to set in motion.

Clooney is – or at least, was – more than just another celebrity-endorsing name from Hollywood. He is embedded with the Democrats. One report had the Biden camp displeased, but cowing to the demand by the actor that the fundraiser Clooney was hosting could only be held on the date of June 15. Clooney’s foibles are not just echoing those of the Democratic Party, they are directly linked.

He is close with Barack Obama, a subject he addressed in connection with speaking about his current Broadway production, “Goodnight, and Good Luck,” for which Tapper was interviewing the actor. Clooney insisted that it is ludicrous that some said he was pushed to pen that op-ed, or that he was merely Obama’s pawn to keep the hands of the former president clean, that claim has validity based on proximity.

Clooney did not act alone and rush to the New York Times with an emotional rant. Recall, Barack Obama was also in attendance at that fateful L.A. fundraiser and saw Biden’s condition firsthand. But even as he had supporting words for Biden after that debate debacle, he was also on hand for George’s Times appearance. Politico reported that Clooney went to Obama ahead of publication, and the former president did nothing to hold Clooney back from running his call to remove Biden. That speaks louder than Obama’s words in the press.

Clooney held back from initially endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris, and has stated he felt that it would have been better for the party to hold a primary for Biden’s replacement. Eventually, he fell into line with support for Harris, and even lent his voice-over work for this rather hilarious attempt they made to persuade Trump voters to cast the “proper” vote in November. Just behold this pathetic “You don’t have to tell them” sales job to sway their cartoonish vision of MAGA voters.

Following the election, Clooney became disenchanted with the political process, as he became the focus of much ire from Democrats on social media. Many were blaming him for the removal of Biden, and for having him replaced with the ineffectual Harris.

The details from the Tapper-Thompson book, and the coverage/reactions to it, are exposing the scripted sham that has been in place for years. Just like Clooney’s current Broadway production, everything they present to the public is based on artifice and distracting displays. The problem is that now the strings and the lighting tricks have been exposed, and the audience for the press is no longer buying into the fiction being presented.
