Regarding the ongoing battle against foreign influence operations exploiting America's student visa program, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced a significant escalation on Wednesday. Specifically, "students" from China will now be targeted, including those with connections to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
This has been a long time coming, for reasons I'll expand on momentarily.

The U.S. will begin revoking visas of Chinese students, including those with connections to the Chinese Communist Party or studying in critical fields.

When analyzing this policy change, only one question needs to be asked: Is China an adversary?
The answer to that is at the center of every other argument that might arise against making this move. One would assume that even most Democrats would agree that China is an adversary hellbent on diminishing American power while expanding its own through theft, manipulation, espionage, and direct action. Given that, why would any sane country actively choose to educate its enemies?
China's goals have been laid bare, and we should be doing everything we can to stop them, not help them along by transferring knowledge to CCP apparatchiks pretending to be neutral "students." The Chinese government isn't letting any of its citizens move to the United States who aren't thoroughly compromised. This isn't normal immigration. It's choosing to become a farm for CCP ambitions of world domination.
Again, why would any sane country do that? Never mind the actual espionage that takes place by "students" who come here on visas. Back in October, five Chinese nationals who attended the University of Michigan were arrested after photographing military exercises involving the Taiwanese. That's just a drop in the bucket regarding the operations the CCP is running inside the United States using student visas as cover.
Of course, Rubio's announcement was met with wailing and gnashing of teeth because the left would sell their own country to the Chinese if they could get away with it.
The grand tradition of solving complex geopolitical tensions by... targeting college kids. Because nothing says "strategic foreign policy" like revoking the visas of students who are here to study, innovate, and often contribute to the U.S. economy and tech sector.

Imagine being naive enough to believe a communist dictatorship is allowing 300,000 students a year (that we are stupidly admitting) to come to America to "study, innovate, and often contribute to the U.S. economy and tech sector." They are being sent here to expand Chinese influence and power, whether that means going back to China with their doctorates or staying in the United States to steal intellectual property and user data. Nothing the CCP does is for the betterment of America. Rubio knows that, and it's why he's doing what his predecessors wouldn't.
