The North Carolina Supreme Court has ruled that over 5,000 overseas ballots must be cured before they can be counted in a move that is likely to overturn the November 2024 election of Democrat Allison Riggs.

Riggs was initially "elected" to the state's Supreme Court after the ballots in question were counted despite the identifications of the voters never being verified per state law. While another 60,000+ votes that were also disputed due to incomplete registrations were ruled to be eligible, the group of 5,000+ ballots that now must be cured could prove decisive. Those who cast them will have 30 days upon notification to provide a copy of their ID or fill out an ID exception form.

Further, 273 ballots were permanently ruled ineligible because they were cast by overseas voters who have never lived in North Carolina and do not meet the requirements for residency. That is expected to narrow the gap for Republican Jefferson Griffin, who now has the chance to overtake Riggs.

With that said, a normal batch of votes requiring curing, such as the 5,000+ in question, wouldn't typically overturn an election decided by over 700 votes. This isn't a normal batch of votes, though. Instead, analysis shows it's made up of mostly Democrat voters, with registration comparisons showing D+53.

All of this has Democrats crying that the election is being "stolen."

Of note is that the vast majority of the ballots in question are not military members, though Democrats are speaking as if they are for obvious political reasons. 

In response to the state Supreme Court's ruling, Riggs did what Democrats always do: She ran to the federal courts to try to garner a favorable opinion. On Saturday afternoon, a judge weighed in, ordering there to be no certification of the results even after the North Carolina Elections Board finished the curing period.

That's an odd ruling because you'd think the federal judge would just stop the elections board from following the state Supreme Court's order if he felt it was improper. Instead, it almost seems as if the judge wants to see how things turn out first before deciding whether to allow certification. But hey, maybe I'm just being a bit too paranoid, given how out of control the federal judiciary has been lately. 

We'll see where this goes, but for the moment, the Republican has a great shot here. What the federal courts then do is anyone's guess, though, and this could end up all the way at the United States Supreme Court before it's over.
