Stop me if you've heard this one before. A member of the mainstream press is accusing Donald Trump of racism.
This wasn't just a passing mention on CNN, though. The head of ABC News took the time to send out a memo to everyone on staff letting it be known that the former president's recent comments were "as racist as they come." They occurred during a rally on Friday in South Carolina.

TRUMP: I got indicted a second time, a third time, and a fourth time, and a lot of people said that's why the black people like me.
According to Punchbowl News, ABC News President Kim Godwin, who is black, found Trump's statement so objectionable that she fired off an internal dissent. Why did she do that? That's the million-dollar question.

There are two angles to consider here. First, is whether Trump's comments were even racist. Having seen the clip of his remarks, I'm failing to see the evidence of that. He was obviously joking, but even if he wasn't, it's not racist to say that people identify with a specific struggle.
Besides, isn't it Democrats who are constantly proclaiming that black people are disproportionality affected by an unfair justice system? Given that, isn't Trump just applying the standard they created, suggesting that black people sympathize with those targeted by judicial persecution? This is a classic case of a leftist making a claim for political gain and then getting upset with Republicans for turning the tables. Is the justice system unfair to black people or not? If it is, then Trump's statement can't be racist.
Regardless, let's get back to that million-dollar question I mentioned: Why is the head of ABC News sending out memos telling staffers what to think about a politician?
News is supposed to be unbiased and uncolored by the dictates of upper management. Godwin overstepped her bounds here, and I don't think for a second it was innocent. Rather, I think she's trying to shape coverage, and by sending out that memo, she's telling everyone under her that they better fall in line lest they too become racist.
The problem for Godwin and the broader left is that when you accuse Republicans of racism for literally anything and everything, the term loses all meaning. People don't even flinch anymore. No one cares so while Godwin's memo was inappropriate, it's going to amount to nothing anyway. Everyone knows who she is now.
