It's an election year, and that means it's time for whatever Democrat is running for president to "move to the center." Joe Biden took the first step in that direction, and it could be mistaken as parody (and should be treated as such).

In a recent speech, the president proclaimed that the border is "not secure" and that he's ready to make "massive changes" to fix the situation.

The "Today" report goes on to say that Biden is encouraging House Speaker Mike Johnson to work with his administration to solve the border crisis. Does anyone actually believe this stuff?
Biden has ushered in the worst border crisis in American history, and it's not because we need "reform." It's because he has steadfastly refused to enforce the law and has dismantled provisions that were in place helping to stem the tide. It was a choice to get rid of "Remain in Mexico." It was a choice to escalate the practice of "catch-and-release" of illegal immigrants into the interior.
Once those two things happened, the crisis was inevitable because word gets out that the gates are open. More and more people then rush to the border, and the problem snowballs. The current catastrophe was orchestrated by Joe Biden, and now he wants to pretend he's a bystander waiting for others to act so he can secure the border.
The real plan here isn't difficult to decipher. Biden knows the House isn't going to go along with the insanely counter-productive border deal now being negotiated in the Senate, which hands out work permits like candy, allows 150,000 illegal entries a month, and only creates more incentive for people to make the journey to the Southern Border. When the deal falls apart, Biden wants to be able to claim he had every intention of securing the border but those dastardly Republicans stopped him.
He has no actual intention of doing that, no matter what the outcome in Congress is. Even in the face of changes to asylum rules, Biden will simply exercise executive discretion and continue to release people into the interior. Everyone knows it, and this sudden shift to being a pragmatist on the border is an obvious charade.
Republicans shouldn't be fooled by this act. Demand substantive changes that will actually help the situation, and if they aren't delivered, tell Biden to pound sand. Let him run as an incumbent overseeing the worst border crisis in the nation's history. We'll see who that works out better for.
