It’s official: House Republicans on Tuesday afternoon delivered two articles of impeachment to the Senate against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for his abject failure to secure the southern border.
Next comes a trial in the Senate, but the Democrat-controlled body is expected to quickly dismiss the charges at the behest of Majority Leader Chuck Schumer or put on a speedy show trial. If the charges are not dismissed outright, Senate jurors could be seated as soon as Wednesday.
Mayorkas is the first Cabinet secretary to be impeached in nearly 150 years. House Republicans voted to impeach Mayorkas in February after failing to do so on their first try.
Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene posted the delivery to social media, adding that Mayorkas is “derelict of his duty”:
I just delivered my Articles of Impeachment against Secretary Mayorkas to the United States Senate.

Mayorkas is derelict of his duty and must be removed from office.

The situation at the border has been a disaster under the Homeland Security Secretary and his boss, President Joe Biden. As many as ten million illegal aliens are estimated to have entered the country illicitly under their "leadership."

Mayorkas and his department have consistently claimed the impeachment charges are baseless and that despite appearances, he's secretly doing a wonderful job.
“Despite warnings from fellow Republicans that this baseless impeachment effort ‘distorts the Constitution,’ House Republicans continue to ignore the facts and undermine the Constitution by wasting even more time on this sham impeachment in the Senate,” a DHS spokesperson said in a statement.
The White House has also pushed back:
Referring to the Mayorkas impeachment proceedings, White House counsel’s office spokesman Ian Sams wrote in a memo, “this effort is a complete waste of time that constitutional and legal experts have said is ‘unconstitutional’ and that even Senate Republicans have made clear they don’t want to focus on.”
This impeachment is not baseless, however, and even if it doesn't get very far in the Senate, Republicans are right to expose the catastrophic job the secretary has done. While it may not accomplish the goal of fixing the illegal immigration problem right away, it shows the American public the depths of the issue, and they can use that information to hopefully vote for a different path in October.
