New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is celebrating historic lows in murders and shootings while anti-Jewish hate crimes surged 71 percent on his watch.

The NYPD announced Wednesday that major crime fell 10.6 percent citywide in May, with record lows in murders, shooting incidents, and shooting victims through the first five months of 2026. Confirmed hate crimes jumped 74.4 percent over the same period last year. Anti-Jewish hate crimes accounted for more than 60 percent of them.

The department confirmed 68 hate crimes in May, up from 39 during the same month last year. Of those, 41 targeted Jews, compared with 24 in May 2025, a 70.8 percent increase. The department also logged 98 total hate-crime complaints, including 60 targeting Jews, nearly one every 12 hours. Anti-Jewish incidents made up 60.3 percent of confirmed hate crimes.

Through the first five months of 2026, the NYPD confirmed 265 hate crimes. Anti-Jewish hate crimes accounted for 152 of them. The next closest groups were anti-Black incidents at 18 and anti-Muslim incidents at 17. Anti-Asian hate crimes totaled nine.

Mamdani, who boycotted the Israel Day Parade last month, has pledged to combat hatred since taking office on January 1. His city's Jewish residents have not seen it.

"There isn't any shock in the Jewish community that antisemitic hate crimes have risen against our community by 70%," said Moshe Spern, president of United Jewish Teachers.

As noted, in May alone, anti-Jewish hate crimes rose from 24 to 41, anti-Muslim incidents rose from three to five, and incidents targeting religion rose from one to 10. The 41 confirmed anti-Jewish hate crimes averaged one every 18 hours and ran 46 percent above the average of the previous three months.

The month's reported incidents included swastika graffiti at synagogues and Jewish neighborhoods, vandalism of a kosher bagel shop, and an assault on a Queens subway. A New York University student, Alexander Stepnowsky, was arrested for allegedly flying a swastika flag over a campus building and charged with hate crime burglary, aggravated harassment, and criminal trespassing. He pleaded not guilty and was released on his own recognizance. NYU said the act "violated our sense of community and solidarity."

Spern added:

"When the mayor of this city continues to use libelous statements against the Jewish people and the state in his speeches and on government-issued social media, when he hosts antisemitic agitators like Mahmoud Khalil, defends his wife’s antisemitic social media history, and has an office to combat antisemitism that is literally only on paper, what do you expect?"

Jewish New Yorkers are 10 percent of the city's population and 57 percent of its confirmed hate crime victims. Murders are down. Shootings are down. Robberies are down. Anti-Jewish hate crimes are up 71 percent and have accounted for the majority of confirmed hate crimes in the nation's largest city every month this year. The question is whether anyone at City Hall actually intends to change that.
