NYC Mayor Mamdani Will Not Attend Israel Day Parade - Is Anyone Really Surprised?

In January, Zohran Mamdani became New York City's first Democratic Socialist and Muslim Mayor. Many speculated about how a Muslim mayor would fare in a place with the largest Jewish population outside of Israel. The answer to that didn't take long. One of his first acts in office was to roll back former Mayor Eric Adams' executive order, which stated that the Big Apple would align with the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's definition of antisemitism.

Mayor Mamdani has now found a new way to snub the Jewish citizens of New York.

Earlier this month, Mamdani announced that he would not be attending the annual Israel Day Parade, which will be held on May 31. The Parade is viewed by many Jewish New Yorkers as a sign of solidarity with both Israel and the local Jewish community. Traditionally, Mayors of both parties have attended the Parade. Mamdani's snub comes at a time when antisemitism is on the rise in New York City. Jewish leaders criticized Mamdani's skipping of the Parade, and in response, two of the City's most prominent Jewish organizations declined an invitation to a Jewish heritage event at Gracie Mansion. A spokesman from the Mayor's office issued a statement to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, which read:

"I look forward to joining and hosting many community events celebrating Jewish life in New York and the rich Jewish history and culture of our city. While I will not be attending the Israel Day Parade, my lack of attendance should not be mistaken for a refusal to provide security or the necessary permits for its safety. I’ve been very clear: I believe in equal rights for all people everywhere. That principle guides me consistently."

However, Mamdani was singing a different tune on the campaign trail. Back then, he implied that he would likely "miss a lot" of New York City's parades due to his political beliefs, but would determine his attendance at those events on a "case-by-case" basis. On which political beliefs is he determining his absence from this parade?

Mamdani's blow-off of the Israel Day Parade comes as the NYPD reported a 35 percent decrease in hate crimes in April, from 77 to 50, compared to the same period in 2025. But the 30 hate crimes reported against Jews in April of this year represent 60 percent of all hate crimes reported. He has also proposed a $26 million annual investment to go toward expanding hate crime prevention efforts.

Mamdani's determination of his attendance at certain events on a "case-by-case basis" brings up a question that a lot of Americans, not just New Yorkers, wonder about. This year is the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Will Mamdani "determine" that he should not attend any memorial services? We can only guess what his determination for that potential snub might be.

It might be an old dusty cliché, but when someone tells you who they are — and in Zohran Mamdani's case, shows you who they are — believe them.
