Finally, Some Justice for Olympic Female Athletes As Shift in IOC Leadership Prompts Rule Change

In a few short months, the eyes of the world will be on Milan, Italy, and the 2026 Winter Olympic Games. Everybody has their favorite sport. From skiing and snowboarding to figure skating and hockey, there is something for everyone to cheer on. Athletes who have given their entire lives to a sport they love will compete to be the best in the world at that sport. But the one thing clouding women's sports in general is the question of transgender athletes, biological men competing against women, and having a far greater advantage. Now, at least for the 2026 Olympics, that will not be a problem.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has announced that it will enact a new policy that will prevent transgender female athletes from competing against biological women. The new policy will also cover athletes with something called differences of sex development (DSD). IOC procedure has been to allow each sport's governing body to make policy decisions regarding transgender athletes. But thankfully, for biological female athletes, the IOC has undergone a leadership change, which has, in turn, prompted the rule change.

New IOC President Kirsty Coventry, a former Olympic swimmer herself who represented Zimbabwe, has vowed to protect women's Olympic sports and also said there is "overwhelming" support from other IOC members. She stated back in June:

We understand that there'll be differences depending on the sport … but it was very clear from the members that we have to protect the female category, first and foremost to ensure fairness.

The IOC appears to have reached its decision through a combination of a "scientific approach" and maybe a bit of common sense. At their recent meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland, IOC Medical and scientific director Dr. Jane Thornton - who is also a former Canadian Olympic rower - presented the initial results of a science-based review on transgender and DSD athletes. Scientific evidence showed, once again, that transgender athletes born male, even if they are undergoing treatment to reduce testosterone levels, still have the male physical advantages they were born with. One source also commented that “It was a very scientific, factual and unemotional presentation which quite clearly laid out the evidence." Ya' don't say...

The policy will also cover the DSD athletes. DSD covers several rare conditions that include genes, hormones, and reproductive organs. Two boxers at the Paris 2024 Olympics, Algeria's Imane Khelif and Taiwan's Lin Yu-Ting, won gold medals in the women's category after they had failed gender eligibility requirements the year before at the World Championships. In still another win for female athletes, World Boxing, which is the new boxing federation, has instituted mandatory sex testing.

The new ruling by the IOC sets a welcome precedent for not just the female athletes who will compete in Milan in 2026, but will be solidly in place for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. In February, President Donald Trump issued an executive order entitled "Keeping Men Out of Women's Sports," and specifically addressed Olympic events held in the U.S. It states that athletes' "eligibility for participation in women’s sporting events is determined according to sex and not gender identity or testosterone reduction."

Who would have thought that a body like the IOC, which might often be thought to consist of a bunch of elitists, all that was needed was to whip a little science on them.
