Trump: 'Great Settlement' Reached to End Iran Crisis

It might be a big day for the nations of the Middle East - or it might be another disappointment. Let's hope for the former. On Thursday, during an Oval Office signing event, President Trump announced what he described as a "great settlement" with Iran. Details were not forthcoming. It's not yet known to what extent Iran is down with the deal, or who's approving it.

The president said:

We just made a great settlement of the war with Iran, and we're gonna be subject to finalization in documents that should get done over the next few days. Probably have a signing maybe in Europe. And it's a great thing.

Stock market is up 1000 points. That means they like the deal. See if the market goes down, that means they don't like the deal. But it's been up. Oil dropped. Oil will start coming down to, I think, even lower than it was before. We had... I said I was in Iowa; it was $1.85 a gallon. And I don't know if we're gonna get there, but we're gonna get pretty close. It's going to come down, and when oil comes out, everything else comes down.

Cautionary note: When it comes to gas prices, "Up like a rocket, down like a feather" will surely apply.

Most importantly, we have a deal that Iran will never have a nuclear weapon, which was the whole purpose of what we had to go through to get this. So it's a big, very big thing. But we have a signing soon. Documents are pretty final shape. So we'll see. Very good. Should be done. That should be done pretty quickly.

They want it every bit as much as everybody else wants. And I think a lot of good relationships can ensue from this. I just spoke with the leaders of many of the countries that were mentioned in the release. I just spoke to Bibi. I spoke to them, great heads of nations: Qatar, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, and others. And we're going to be talking to Turkey. President Erdogan is great. It's really a wonderful thing with a lot of spirit. Pakistan was fantastic. The Prime Minister, I call him General. He is a general. He is a great, great general. So great that there's actually a Field Marshal, a step above. And they are all very happy. The whole Middle East is happy and long beyond the Middle East.

The Strait (of Hormuz) will open as soon as we have it signed.

It's tempting to invoke Lucy van Pelt, Charlie Brown and that famous football here, but we'll see. Iran was just subjected to another round of pummeling; could that have been what finally brought them to the table? And who in Iran is agreeing to this?

The real question here is which faction in Iran is approving of this deal, and which factions might be rather less inclined to go along with it. And there is the one great concern that remains: What's left of the theocratic regime of the mullahs simply can't be trusted. Any such deal, any restraints placed on Iran, should be dealt with under the doctrine, not of "trust, but verify," but rather, "never trust, always verify."

Editor's Note: For decades, former presidents have been all talk and no action. Now, Donald Trump is eliminating the threat from Iran once and for all.
