Never let it be said that President Donald Trump is one to mince words.
When the UK's Daily Mail asked the president in an exclusive interview, he said exactly what he thinks of the embattled, scandal-ridden former Representative Eric Swalwell. He was, in his usual style, very direct.
'We'll see what happens,' Trump told the Daily Mail when asked about the political fallout from the scandal.
'He's a sleazebag. Always has been. He's a long timer, and he's a bad guy. I don't know anything about the charges, but he's a bad guy.'
It seems likely that the President of the United States would have been briefed on the accusations against a vocal adversary like Swalwell, but he can scarcely comment on an ongoing scandal if there is any possibility of criminal charges. Some of the accusations, of rape and sexual assault, may well come to that.
The president also has to be feeling just a little personal satisfaction in all this:
Swalwell has been one of Trump’s most vocal critics in Congress, accusing the President of colluding with Russia during the 2016 election. He also served as an impeachment manager during Trump’s second trial in 2021.
'He's always been a bad guy, he’s a corrupt politician, and everyone knows it, so it's happening to him, and we'll see what happens. Right? Let him go defend himself,' Trump added.
Two criminal investigations into the assault claims against Swalwell have been started by both the Manhattan District Attorney's Office and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
Swalwell has denied any wrongdoing in connection with the rape and sexual assault allegations. While rejecting the claims, the former lawmaker acknowledged making 'mistakes in judgment' and apologized to his wife, Brittany Watts.
While the acts Swalwell is accused of are certainly mistakes in judgment, if even half the allegations are true, it would seem to go well beyond that. As of this writing, however, no charges have been filed or any indictments sought. However, there are investigations underway by the Manhattan District Attorney's office, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's office and District Attorney's office, and possibly by the U.S. Department of Justice. That's serious stuff.

GOP Takes Top Spots in Crowded California Governor Race Following Swalwell's Ignominious Exit
Interesting side note: As of this writing, California's Governor Gavin Newsom has remained silent about the whole thing since Swalwell resigned from Congress and dropped out of the California gubernatorial race. Swalwell's departure from that campaign has set the other Democrats in the race scrambling to take his place as the Democratic front-runner, and no one candidate has emerged to claim that place yet. Stay tuned.
