President Trump, as we've seen in several recent stories, has ordered the release of a bunch of what are reportedly "UFO files." There has been a lot of speculation as to what's in those files, and no, there are not two intrepid federal agents named Scully and Mulder looking them over before release. This has, as you might expect, caused a minor explosion of speculation: Have aliens visited Earth? Are they here now? What do they look like?
A more interesting question might be this: What would aliens think of us?
For generations, human beings have wondered: What would alien life from another planet be like? But we rarely ask the opposite: What would they think of us?
It’s a question that can produce some, well, uncomfortable answers if you happen to be an earthling.
“If I were looking at Earth from a distance, I would be pretty disappointed,” theoretical physicist Avi Loeb says. “Most of our investing is dealing with conflicts to prevent other people from killing us or us killing others. Look at the Ukraine war over a little bit of territory. That is not a sign of intelligence.”
The debate on whether little green men or UFOs are among us escalated in February when former President Barack Obama, responding to a podcaster’s question, said aliens are “real,” but he ”hasn’t seen them” and “they’re not being kept at Area 51.” President Donald Trump later announced on social media that he was directing release of government files because of “tremendous interest.”
We'll see about that. In the meantime, I don't think Dr. Loeb's analysis goes far enough. I think it is far more likely that any alien intelligence might take little if any notice of us at all.
Look, humanoid aliens, ones we can have social interaction with, or in some cases even interbreed with, are outrageously unlikely, science-fiction stories notwithstanding. I know a thing or two about science fiction stories, having written a few. Social interaction is a requirement for storyline development; see Device, Plot, 1 Each. But there are two reasons why any aliens who managed to travel here to our little blue-green world wouldn't even notice us:
First, any race capable of navigating interstellar distances, either through superluminal travel or just sending out probes with lifespans of centuries, would be advanced beyond our ability to imagine. To them, we may be little more than the equivalent of a kid's science fair project, like a petri dish full of an interesting mold; something to be examined with mild curiosity - or neutralized with Lysol.
Second, these creatures would be alien. Not a television or movie alien, just people with funny hair and lots of makeup. They would be alien, in ways we may not be able to imagine. They might communicate in ways we could never understand. Their social systems may be incomprehensible. They may not even exhibit the one thing that has defined the development of every human culture, ever, that being our sexual bipolarity.
Then, there's this:
A 2021 survey conducted by the Pew Research Center showed about two-thirds of Americans said their best guess is that intelligent life exists on other planets. About half of U.S. adults said UFOs reported by people in the military are “definitely” or “probably” evidence of intelligent life outside Earth.
The honest answer to that question, of course, is "we don't know."

So far - we'll see what's in these files, but you can color me skeptical - there's no evidence of alien visitations to Earth. I'd bet a fair sum that there won't be any such evidence in any document dump from Washington. Do I believe there is alien life out there, somewhere? I do. My education and reading in biology tend to have me thinking that life probably arises anywhere conditions allow it to do so, and in our galaxy alone, there are trillions of possibilities. But the time scales and distances involved are too incomprehensibly huge; we'll never see these creatures, these life forms, for ourselves.
If it's aliens you are looking for, best to stick to science fiction. It's likely less realistic, but it is a lot more entertaining.
