RNC Amends the Bylaws for Its New Fall Convention Spectacle Ahead of 2026 Midterms

On Friday, the Republican National Committee voted to amend its bylaws to allow for something unprecedented: A 2026 mid-term convention. This is sure to be a critical election year, perhaps one of the most critical midterm elections in recent history, so this isn't a bad idea at all.

The Republican National Committee on Friday voted to amend its bylaws to clear the way for a GOP "midterm convention" ahead of November's elections.

Party conventions are typically only held in presidential election years, but President Trump and his senior advisers have been pushing for such a gathering to highlight the party's agenda heading into a challenging midterm election environment.

Friday's vote, at the RNC's winter meeting in sunny Santa Barbara, California, removes procedural hurdles for the party to move forward. The measure passed unanimously by voice vote.

This is an election in which it sure seems national Republicans are leaning in hard. Between the redistricting efforts, the push in many states and at the national level for voter ID laws and audits/cleanups of state voter rolls, it's great to see the GOP taking this seriously.

It's a safe bet a bunch of President Trump's signature enormous, raucous rallies will be part of the plan. I've never been too certain that these rallies bring many new Republican voters, as they tend to have audiences that are already self-selected GOP (and more to the point, Trump) loyalists. But they work wonders for enthusiasm, and enthusiasm can count for a lot where elections are concerned.

There are two cities in the running for the location of this new event.

Two cities are currently being floated to host the convention: Dallas and Las Vegas. A senior GOP source said the convention would likely take place in early fall, rather than during the summer, when presidential-nominating conventions typically occur.

"If we're going to defy history, we got to do things outside the box, and one of the things is highlighting all the great things the president has done over the first year," RNC Chairman Joe Gruters said in a brief interview with CBS News. "There is no better way than to tell the American people all the great things the president has done than over a convention. It has never been done before."

Too many good ideas have been dismissed with the words "It has never been done before." Not this time.

This is a critical juncture we're at as a nation, as a republic, and as a people. The Republican Party, from the president down to the Third Assistant Dogcatcher in Goochland, South Dakota, has to be ready to step up, to campaign like nobody's business. This year, the GOP has to pull out all the stops, then find new stops and pull them out, too. Every candidate had dad-gum well better be on board. We voters also had dad-gum better be on board. All too often, it's turnout that kills the GOP, especially in midterms, and we just can't afford that anymore. That's why this idea is a good one.

The president has accomplished a lot more in the last year. So has the Republican Congress. There is a lot left to be done. But first, we have to win. It's as simple as that: We have to win.
