Winning: ICE New Jersey Busts Chilean Theft Ring

File this under, "Well, not all of the federal government is shut down." Immigrations & Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers operating out of Newark, New Jersey, are still on the job, and they have arrested nine Chilean nationals who were in the country illegally and who were part of an organized theft ring.

Maybe they were hungry, or were just stealing stuff that American thieves won't steal. Or maybe they were part of an organized South American theft group:

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement-Newark officers have arrested nine Chileans linked to a South American Theft Groups (SATG) operating in New Jersey.

ICE Newark, working with FBI Newark’s Criminal Enterprise agents and Joint Organized Crime Task Force agents, made the arrests in Jersey City and Princeton.

Each individual arrested was found to have overstayed their visas; many were found to have extensive criminal histories involving theft and related offenses in multiple states. It remains unclear how or why they were released into the country with criminal records or why they weren’t deported after racking up extensive criminal records.

ICE Newark is withholding the names of individuals arrested due to an ongoing investigation. However, it released information about those agents arrested.

That's appropriate, although it's likely the identities of these goblins will be revealed in due course. ICE has, however, been forthcoming with information on what some of the Chilean thieves have been up to:

One Chilean national illegally in the U.S. “has prior arrests in Florida for petit theft, retail theft, and use of an anti-shoplifting device, as well as fraudulent credit card use in Tennessee,” ICE said. “This criminal alien is also wanted in multiple states for similar crimes including larceny and burglary.”

Another is an active SATG member “previously arrested for larceny in Florida and arrested again in New Jersey for receiving stolen property,” ICE said.

Another is a “criminal alien with prior arrests for petit larceny, grand theft, and DUI, who also has an outstanding warrant in Florida for failure to appear,” ICE said.

Another is a known associate of a SATG with an outstanding warrant for burglary in Pennsylvania.

Yeah, these are people we don't want in our country. They are crooks, they are illegal aliens, and we have no place for them here. We have enough home-grown criminals already without importing more.

These "theft groups" are a type of what ICE and the FBI call "crime tourism." The FBI has released a video that (among other topics) discusses these organizations.

This video states in part:

This term refers to groups of foreign nationals of South American descent who enter the U.S. illegally or overstay their visas, and who commit crimes, including commercial and residential burglaries. They frequently use rental vehicles and rely on fake IDs and documents.

Members of South American Theft Groups often use multiple burner phones to communicate, intentionally making it harder for law enforcement to identify their identities, phone numbers, and location. Additionally, they tend to use encrypted messaging applications to communicate with one another.

When choosing which homes to break into, these groups gravitate towards expensive homes with surroundings like golf courses, parks, or walking trails— features that can make it easier for would-be thieves to sneak in. They use a combination of internet research, surveillance, and commercially available camera and tracking technologies to scope out their targets.

When they decide to strike, they tend to break into homes through their back windows or glass doors—preferably on the second floor of a residence. And once inside, they mainly look to steal jewelry and designer accessories, frequently leaving other expensive items behind.

Afterwards, these groups retreat to one of their hubs along the East or West Coast of the United States.

There has been a marked increase in these kinds of organized crime rings in recent years, very likely aided by the Biden administration's utter lack of border enforcement, which made it easy for the theft rings to cross back and forth.

That's changing now. These nine Chileans will either face charges here or will be summarily repatriated. Either's fine, so long as one way or another, they end up back where they belong, either after a trial and sentence or at once; the latter, it would seem, would present a bargain for the American taxpayers.

In any case, good work, ICE-Newark! These goblins, at least, won't be stealing any more for a while.
