Destroying speedboats carrying loads of illegal drugs is always worth doing.
The United States has now destroyed four drug-smuggling speedboats. These boats are thought to have all originated in Venezuela:
- September 2, 2025: The first strike targeted a speedboat allegedly smuggling narcotics. Eleven people were killed.
- September 15, 2025: President Donald Trump announced a second military strike against a Venezuelan-linked vessel, killing three people.
- September 16, 2025: A third boat was reportedly sunk.
- September 19, 2025: A fourth suspected drug boat was destroyed, with three more fatalities reported.
That's what one calls "a good start."
On Monday, the Dominican Republic reported the confiscation of more than a ton of cocaine taken from the boat sunk on the 19th.
The Dominican Republic has indicated that a boat targeted by a U.S. airstrike had been ferrying "approximately 1,000 kilograms of suspected cocaine."
That figure converts to more than 2,200 pounds, which is more than one ton of the drug.
The Dominican Republic indicated that its National Drug Control Directorate and its navy seized hundreds of packages of the drug following the American attack against the vessel. "The packages were sent, under chain of custody, to the National Institute of Forensic Sciences (INACIF) to determine their exact type and weight, the country noted.
Here are a few details of the operation:
"Dominican authorities, in close coordination with the United States Southern Command (Southcom) and the Joint Interagency Task Force South (JIATF-South), detected a speedboat (Go Fast type), which according to intelligence reports was loaded with narcotics and was heading to Dominican territory, with the intention of using the country as a bridge to take it to the United States," the National Drug Control Directorate news release states.
Three people on the destroyed boat were reportedly killed.
What makes this case different is that the Dominican Republic worked directly with the United States, as this boat was headed for Dominican waters, presumably to use that country as a bridge to forward the drugs on to the United States. A video released by the Dominican Republic described the confiscation of the drugs, and presented a video of the boat being destroyed in what looks like an air strike by a missile.
There is one curious aspect to this; if the drug boat was, as appears, exploded by a missile, how did the Dominican authorities confiscate the drugs? They would almost certainly have had to have boarded the boat before it was turned into flying spare parts. If so, why didn't they take the crew prisoner? It's possible the drugs were blown clear, and later fished from the water, but the video included makes it look as though the boat was pretty well disintegrated by the strike.
It's a bit curious, although the result, one more drug-smuggling boat now serving as a breeding ground for fish, is a good thing.

In the video above, Venezuelan strongman ruler Nicolás Maduro made some tough talk.
Get ready. Get ready. Because if Venezuela is attacked, as Che Guevara said, there will be one, two, three Vietnams.
President Trump responded in his usual style:

We can expect the disassembly of these drug-running boats to continue, proving once more that there is no problem that cannot be solved with a suitable application of high explosives.
