It's nice that there are things in life you can always count on. The sun always comes up in the east, for every drop of rain that falls, a spot always gets wet, and every time Senator Elizabeth "Spreading Bull" Warren (D-MA) gets a dumb idea, she always tries to make it a dumb law.
As the US labor market comes under pressure, two senior figures in Washington are pushing to end a practice that prevents large swaths of US workers from obtaining jobs.
A bill reintroduced today by Elizabeth Warren, the senator from Massachusetts, and Steve Cohen, the representative from Tennessee, bans employers from using credit checks to vet potential hires.
Denying jobs based on a candidate’s financial history “makes no sense”, the prominent Democrats argue. It also disproportionately affects minorities.
There's a lot wrong with all of that; for one thing, the U.S. labor market is a lot healthier than it was only a few months ago, when "Autopen Joe" Biden was still converting oxygen into carbon dioxide in the White House. But the big thing is that Senator Warren's idea, as is usually the case, makes no sense. It serves no purpose. It's just hand-waving.
Besides the fact that the Congress has no business (and no constitutional authority) to dictate this kind of thing to employers, a prospective employee's credit history may indeed be very valuable to an employer. It speaks to the person's sense of responsibility, their ability to plan, to, as my kids often put it, to "adult." And if I were hiring someone to handle money, I'd sure as heck want to know if they are under repeated financial strain, to the point where their credit score is in single digits.
The bill would amend the Fair Credit Reporting Act to stop employers from requiring job applicants to disclose their credit history, or suggesting they should, and from procuring consumer or investigative reports on applicants. It also would prohibit credit reporting agencies from providing reports to employers, and prevent employers from disqualifying job applicants based on credit information.
“Nobody should be discriminated against and miss out on a job opportunity because of their financial history,” Warren said in a statement to the Guardian.
Yes, actually, many people should be discriminated against because of their financial history.

Now this bill is going nowhere in the GOP-controlled Senate, and frankly, it shouldn't. But Senator Warren, in defending her dumb idea, which she wants to make a dumb law, has one more dumb card left to play.
Credit reports in the hiring process are “disproportionately used to disqualify people of color from open positions”, according to Warren’s office, which said that women are also more likely to have poor credit.
Oh, for the luvva Pete, put it back in the deck. The unspoken message here is obvious - and insulting. "People of color can't have good credit scores," they are saying, to which I would reply, "Why not? Are the credit reporting agencies somehow identifying 'people of color' by their credit history and downgrading them unfairly? Or is this just another instance of "People of color aren't as capable at finding gainful employment and aren't capable of paying their bills on time"?
Well, these are the same people who think that "people of color" are too inept to obtain some kind of ID, but are perfectly OK with them voting - with no ID.
Just another dumb idea from Senator Elizabeth Warren; another one of those things we can rely on. She has obviously never read the Constitution, and she has the economic acumen of a turnip. Fortunately, her ideas aren't going anywhere for now.
