New: The D.C. Homicide-Free Streak Ends

The Trump administration's efforts to bring law and order to the nation's capital have been far more successful than many of us would have guessed. Crime rates are down, people are on the streets again, and restaurant traffic is picking up. Homicides in particular dropped off; when the pre-Trump District of Columbia was averaging a murder every other day or so-and underreporting them, at that- the District has been murder-free for almost two weeks.

Until Tuesday. Well, it was bound to happen sooner or later.

A man was killed in Washington, D.C., early Tuesday, marking the first apparent homicide reported in the city in 12 days.

Officers responded to reports of a shooting at approximately 12:25 a.m. on Tuesday in Southeast Washington, the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) said in a statement.

The officers found a man “unconscious and breathing, suffering from a gunshot wound.”

The man was transported to a local hospital, “where after all lifesaving measures failed, he was pronounced dead,” MPD said.

The last reported homicide was on August 13th.

On Monday, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) gave the Trump administration credit for the reduction in crime in the District:

There have been 101 homicides reported in the database so far this year, compared with 118 over the same period last year. The preliminary data are not final, however, and more crime incidents may be added to the database over that period in the future.

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) credited Trump with the no-killings streak, saying on Monday that the president deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for his takeover of the city.

“There are MANY reasons why President Trump deserves the Nobel Peace Prize – but 11 straight days with ZERO murders in Washington, D.C. might top the list,” Johnson said Monday in a social media post. “SAFER streets. STRONGER communities. AMERICA IS BACK!”

Of course, these things don't change overnight.

We should also note that many of the measures the Trump administration has taken are, by necessity, temporary. The National Guard troops and the surge of federal law enforcement can't be sustained indefinitely. It's also very likely that, despite the arrests already made, a certain number of the goblins that infest the District are smart enough to lie low, to keep a low profile until, they are likely presuming, things go back to normal.

The increased law enforcement and the National Guard troops are effective at reducing street-level crime. Showing the flag like this generally is. But the root causes have to be examined, rooted out, pinned down, and addressed as well. In determining those root causes, one should take a close, hard look at the justice system within the District, from prosecutors to judges. Revolving-door justice systems are all too common in Democratic jurisdictions, and the District's revolving door is notorious.

Then, and only then, will the nation's capital city's crime problem be fixed for good.
