On Monday morning, President Donald Trump invited the White House press pool into the Oval Office, where the president signed several executive orders, most having to do with crime and law and order issues. Further, he had some sharp things to say about some of the nation's big-city mayors and blue-state governors.

Here are some highlights.

First, the president touted the administration's successes in clamping down on crime in the District of Columbia.

After signing an EO removing federal funding from jurisdictions that have "cashless bail" policies, the president spoke on that issue as well as the failures of blue-state and blue-city leaders to address major crime issues.

The White House also slammed cashless bail policies in a press release supporting the EO signing; some examples from the press release include:

  • In 2022, a New York City man was released without bail after he smeared his own feces on a random woman waiting for the subway — despite having dozens of prior arrests, including for slugging a bus driver just months earlier and a heinous hate crime that occurred the prior year.
  • In 2022, a New York man brutally executed a mother in front of her three children less than 24 hours after he was freed without bail in a violent assault of the same woman. The man had a prior conviction for kidnapping his ex-girlfriend at gunpoint.
  • In 2023, two men who beat up a NYPD officer were freed without bail.
  • In 2024, two illegal immigrants who jumped and bit two NYPD cops were cut loose without bail.
  • In 2024, a suspected Tren de Aragua gang member — freed without bail after an attempted murder in New York — was arrested for drug trafficking and released again, before he was finally arrested and held for the sex trafficking of a minor.

When asked about the cashless bail EO and urban crime rates overall, the president called out Chicago by name:

The Director of the United States Marshals Service, Gadyaces S. Serralta, also presented President Trump with an honorary U.S. Marshal's badge and handcuff key. Founded in 1789, the U.S. Marshals are the nation's oldest federal law enforcement service.

The president also had some pointed opinions on the possible upcoming deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia:

When President Trump resumed office in January, we observed at the time that he and his team were wasting no time. That still holds true today; this has been the busiest presidential administration in living memory. It's essential to remember, however, that any action taken by the executive branch will require congressional approval to become permanent; fortunately, that appears more likely today than it did in January.
