ICE Busts Convicted Illegal Alien Sex Offender - After Local Judge Let Him Go Free

The winning isn't limited to international trade. The Trump administration is dealing with the problem of illegal alien criminals, too. In the latest news from that quarter, Immigrations & Customs Enforcement has just picked up an illegal alien and convicted child sex offender in Fairfax County, Virginia - after a county judge suspended his sentence and set him back out on the street. ICE detainers for this goblin have been ignored by county authorities.

Dramatic video showing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arresting convicted sex offender 21-year-old Ander Cortez-Mendez in Falls Church, Virginia, on April 2nd. US border agents arrested Cortez-Mendez after they say he illegally entered the U.S. near the Rio Grande Valley in Texas in 2018. ICE (is) saying he was supposed to appear before an immigration judge but didn't show up to court. According to ICE, he was arrested in Fairfax County for an alleged sex crime last year in March. Agents issued a detainer against Cortez-Mendez with the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center. And then, on May 20th of last year, a Fairfax County judge gave him a three-month suspended sentence after he was found guilty of having sex with a child. Despite being found guilty, ICE says Fairfax County officials did not honor ICE's detainer and released Cortez-Mendez back into the community in northern Virginia. And then, last Wednesday, that is when the ICE agents arrested him.

ICE later released a statement that reads in part:

"Ander Cortez-Mendez is a convicted sex offender, and exactly the type of illegal alien that ICE officers seek to remove from Washington, D.C. and Virginia," said ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations Washington, D.C. Field Office Director Russell Hott. "We refuse to allow such offenders to continue to threaten the residents of our neighborhoods. ICE Washington, D.C. and our law enforcement partners will continue to arrest and remove criminal aliens from the streets of our communities."

Let's recap: This guy, a sexual predator in the United States in violation of immigration law, committed a sex crime on a child, was found guilty of that crime, slapped on the wrist, then patted on the head and set free. Fairfax County was in receipt of an ICE detainer but ignored it. So, ICE, doing their jobs, had to confront and arrest this goblin in the street. Fortunately, from the video, it seems to have gone smoothly, but it could very easily have gone south. If Cortez-Mendez, a convicted felon, had resisted - had he been armed - things could have ended very badly.

On the other hand, if Fairfax County had honored the ICE detainer, ICE could have simply accepted a handover of Cortez-Mendez at the jail, under controlled circumstances, with virtually no risk to the officers or any possible bystanders.

It's insane that we're still playing these games. And the people of Virginia need to be careful how they vote; one of their gubernatorial candidates is campaigning with the very people who let Cortez-Mendez go free.
