The UN Secretary General's Finger Wagging at Israel Once Again Proves the UN's Uselessness

Why does the United States continue to support the United Nations? My colleague Jeff Charles has the news on the latest from the UN; in a staggering display of dis-proportionality, the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has condemned the Hamas attack on Israel but managed to draw what seems to be a moral comparison in Israel's response.

U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres condemned the Hamas terrorist attack against Israel on Monday, but also said he is "deeply distressed" by Israel's response.

Guterres addressed the ongoing conflict from the United Nations briefing room on Monday, telling reporters that "nothing can justify" Hamas' attack on Israel, which killed at least 800 people.

The Secretary-General could have stopped right there, and that would have been a reasonable and effective statement from the United Nations. But he didn't stop there. The final part of his statement on the conflict betrayed his own inexplicable animus towards the only effective modern democracy in the Middle East and drew a hideous moral equivalency between Israel and Hamas:

"While I recognize Israel’s legitimate security concerns, I also remind Israel that military operations must be conducted in strict accordance with international humanitarian law," he said. "I am deeply distressed by today’s announcement that Israel will initiate a complete siege of the Gaza Strip, nothing allowed in – no electricity, food, or fuel. The humanitarian situation in Gaza was extremely dire before these hostilities; now it will only deteriorate exponentially."

"Deeply distressed," he may be, but Israel has taken the gloves off, and they are fully justified in doing so. The proper response from Israel to the Secretary-General's being "deeply distressed" should be a clear statement that would end with the phrase "...and the horse you rode in on." The blockade is fully justified, especially when the alternatives include carpet-bombing Gaza into a heap of rubble. Israel is responding to one of the most vicious, savage, uncivilized attacks in modern history, and they are showing uncommon restraint given the circumstances.

Look at the UN Human Rights Council for an example of how dysfunctional the United Nations is today. The Human Rights Council describes itself as "...an intergovernmental body within the United Nations system responsible for strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights around the globe and for addressing situations of human rights violations and making recommendations on them." This is an organization that includes states such as China (which runs re-education camps and ruthlessly represses its Uighur minority,) Afghanistan (now ruled again by the Taliban after our withdrawal), and South Africa, of "Kill the Boer" infamy.

Also, the UN has been extremely hostile towards Israel in the months leading up to the Hamas invasion.

The General Assembly approved 15 anti-Israel resolutions last year (2022), versus 13 resolutions criticizing other countries, according to a tally by the pro-Israel monitoring group UN Watch.

Russia was the focus of six resolutions condemning its invasion of Ukraine. North Korea, Afghanistan, Myanmar, Syria, Iran and the US were hit with one resolution each.

Saudi Arabia, China, Lebanon, Turkey, Venezuela and Qatar, which have poor human rights records or were involved in regional conflicts, were not dinged by any resolutions criticizing them.

Since 2015, the General Assembly has adopted 140 resolutions criticizing Israel, mainly over its treatment of the Palestinians, its relationships with neighboring countries and other alleged wrongdoings. Over the same period, it has passed 68 resolutions against all other countries, UN Watch said.

While it's unfair, perhaps, to say that the UN has given Hamas license to commit their atrocities, they certainly haven't discouraged them any. In a Security Council meeting on Sunday (Oct 8), that august body was presented with a United States demand for a unanimous condemnation of Hamas, but you can probably guess what action was taken:

The U.N. Security Council held an emergency meeting behind closed doors Sunday, with the United States demanding all 15 members strongly condemn “these heinous terrorist attacks committed by Hamas,” but they took no immediate action.

The United Nations is an organization that has outlived its usefulness, and it has been decidedly unfriendly towards the U.S. for quite a while. So, yes, let’s tell the United Nations where to go. Kick them out of that posh New York building, and let them sod off to Belgium, Belize, or Baluchistan. The only time they smile at the U.S. is when they need something paid for or need a few thousand young men to go die in some third-world country for a brush fire that’s none of our business. We don’t need that, and we don’t need the United Nations.
