Christmas is coming early for the Democrat Party, and it's arriving in the form of a Utah congressional seat. Santa Claus, in this case, is Utah District Court Judge Dianna Gibson, who on Monday rejected a Republican-approved congressional map and approved instead a map that carves out a Democrat-leaning district.
In making her ruling, Gibson decided that the GOP-drawn map, known as Map C, "does not comply with Utah law.” The judge wrote that Map C “was drawn with partisan political data on display. Map C does not abide by Proposition 4’s traditional redistricting criteria ‘to the greatest extent practicable." Proposition 4 refers to a 2018 ballot measure approved by Utah voters that reformed the state's redistricting standards.
Gibson concluded, “And, based on the evidence presented, the Court finds that [Republicans’ House map] was drawn with the purpose to favor Republicans."
Dems score huge redistricting victory in Utah, as judge overrules GOP legislature and orders a map w/ a new Harris +24 #UT01, guaranteeing Dems a one seat pickup. https://t.co/gtu8WbEr7s pic.twitter.com/rxacR3JQqL

The ruling comes after the League of Women Voters of Utah and Mormon Women for Ethical Government filed a lawsuit in which they argued that GOP lawmakers were attempting to gerrymander the state's congressional districts, which would be a violation of the law. The plaintiffs drew up their own map to include a district that would heavily favor the Democrat candidate, and this is the map approved by Gibson.
Girl power?
Here are details on the new district:
[In place of the GOP map], she chose a congressional map that includes a Democratic-leaning district anchored in northern Salt Lake County. According to court filings, it is approximately 43% Republican. Utah's current map splits the populous Salt Lake County into four districts.
Curiously, the judge's ruling was handed down the night before Utah officials were to begin preparing for the 2026 midterm elections.

Democrats are, of course, taking a victory lap. Democrat National Committee (DNC) Chair Ken Martin said in a statement, "The DNC applauds the decision to choose a fair, impartial map that reflects the diversity and ideological makeup of the state."
And Suzan DelBene, chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, remarked, "…Make no mistake: Across the country, Republicans are rigging congressional maps because they can’t defend their toxic record to gut health care and raise costs for families — all to deliver tax cuts to the wealthy and well-connected."
One Utah Republican, state Rep. Matt MacPherson, plans to file articles of impeachment against Gibson, arguing she has engaged in a "gross abuse of power."
I have opened a bill to file articles of impeachment against Judge Gibson for gross abuse of power, violating the separation of powers and failing to uphold her oath of office to the Utah Constitution.

No doubt about it, this is huge win for Democrats ahead of next year's midterm elections. Meanwhile, redistricting battles wage on in states like Virginia, North Carolina, and Indiana.
The midterm elections will take place on November 3, 2026.
