Rep. Al Green's Obnoxious Antics at Trump's Speech Just Backfired—Here Comes the Brutal Reality Check

Rep. Al Green (D-TX) may be about to find out that actions have consequences, something that has been an all-too-rare occurrence of late for members of the Democrat Party (barring their electoral spanking on November 5, of course). Green, as RedState has been reporting, stood up at the beginning of President Trump's Tuesday night speech to a joint session of Congress, obnoxiously began spouting some nonsense about Medicare, then was kicked out of the chamber when he refused to behave with even a modicum of maturity.

Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA), who was quick to bring order to the chamber, shared some thoughts Wednesday morning on Green's antics and what it means for the Democrat Party.

If the Democrats want a 77-year-old congressman to be the face of their resistance heckling the president, then bring it on. But we couldn't allow that on the House floor and so I had to eject them. I didn't want to do that. I hate that it resorted to that, but we've got to keep decorum in the chamber.

This used to be a celebrated event, you know, pomp and circumstance, and both sides would applaud for the president. You know, we did that for President Biden on the lines that were there.

While Speaker Johnson took swift and decisive action to deal with Green, some of his Republican colleagues say they are going to be pushing for the Democrat to face formal censure in front of the chamber.

The House Freedom Caucus (HFC) put House members on notice before Trump's speech that any Democrat who followed through on their threats to disrupt the address would be punished for their actions.

“The President's address to tonight’s joint session of Congress is a constitutional obligation — not a sideshow for Democrats to use noisemakers, make threats, throw things or otherwise disrupt. Our colleagues are on notice that the heckler's veto will not be tolerated. You will be censured. We expect the Sergeant at Arms and Capitol Police to take appropriate action against any Members of Congress or other persons violating House rules.”

Rep. Green failed to heed the warning, and censure is soon to be on the table as a reward for his efforts. Here's the lowdown on how censure works in the U.S. House of Representatives:

A vote of censure is reserved for “more-serious violations,” according to the House rules. When the House approves a censure measure with a majority vote, the member being censured must “stand in the well of the House” as the presiding officer reads the censure resolution aloud.

According to the House historical website, this is meant to serve as a “form of public rebuke.” In both the Senate and the House, there must be a majority vote to censure a member of Congress for their behavior.

HFC members took to X on Wednesday to voice their disgust for Green's actions and desire to see the appropriate punishment dished out.

The last two members of Congress to be censured were Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) for her radical support of Hamas in the wake of October 7 and former Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) for pulling a fire alarm in the Cannon House Office Building to disrupt a vote to fund the government.
