New: Kamala Harris Becomes Persona Non Grata for Some CA Democrats Ahead of 2026 Midterms and Here's Why

Undoubtedly, former Vice President Kamala Harris is leaning on her closest advisors to help her determine whether or not to run for California governor in 2026 or even president in 2028.

As she does, however, with a decision on the 2026 race reportedly coming by the end of the summer, some fundraisers and big-money Democrat donors are said to be ambivalent about the possibility she'll run to lead the Golden State, with "several major donors in the state" telling POLITICO "they fear her reemergence as a candidate would re-open still-fresh wounds from her defeat in 2024."

Further, some prominent Democrat political figures in California with whom Harris has a complicated history are also weighing in, with former SF mayor and ex-state assembly speaker Willie Brown, whom Harris had a relationship with in the mid-1990s while Brown was married, suggesting in a recent interview that "She may not want to run for Governor. I think it will be difficult for her to win that job."

Interestingly, some California Democrats are dodging the Harris 2026 question like a hot potato, with some refusing to comment and others giving lukewarm answers on the possibility:

Rep. Dave Min was chatting with reporters at the US Capitol when the California Democrat was asked about whether he wants Kamala Harris to run for governor.

Suddenly, Min no longer had time to talk.

“I have no comment,” he said.

Asked what he thought a Harris run would mean for his own reelection prospects, Min repeated, “I have no comment on that, sorry,” and bolted onto the House floor, away from reporters.

Rep. George Whitesides, another Democratic freshman from California who beat an incumbent Republican by 8,000 votes, took a long pause before answering whether he wanted to see the former vice president run.

“I welcome her to the race. I’m just really focused on my own race, but if that’s what she feels calls to do, that’s her prerogative,” Whitesides told CNN.

The fear among some Democrats in the state, according to the CNN report, is that she could galvanize Republicans in 2026 and hurt vulnerable Democrats in competitive races:

The Harris critics — few of whom will put their names to their complaints — are doing their own math: She would probably win if she runs, they say, but if she doesn’t generate enthusiasm or if she fires up Republicans, she could prove a drag on vulnerable Democrats like Min and Whitesides as well as State Assembly and State Senate districts where Democrats don’t have votes to spare.

And needless to say, with national battles emerging over possible mid-decade Congressional redistricting happening in red states like Texas and Florida ahead of the 2026 midterms, Democrats in California are going to want to put who they see as their best candidate forward in the governor's race in hopes they wouldn't hurt and possibly could even help their purple district candidates and incumbents.
