When it comes to so-called “abortion rights”, Democratic presidential candidate Julián Castro believes no one should be excluded from the right to choose – including men who identify as women.
At last night’s Democratic debate, Castro was asked about his position on abortion rights and if his healthcare plan would cover abortion costs. Here’s what the former housing secretary had to say:
“I don’t believe only in reproductive freedom, I believe in reproductive justice. And, you know, what that means is just because a woman, or let’s also not forget someone in the trans community, a trans female, is poor doesn’t mean they shouldn’t have the right to exercise that right to choose.”
Watch Castro’s remarks below:
There’s just one slight problem with this answer: Men cannot get pregnant.
Twitter users noticed, and responded:
Julian Castro: "I believe that transwomen(men that transitioned to women) should have the right to have an abortion."
Wait what?#DemDebate

Did I hear that right? Castro is boldly for trans abortion, which would be people born as men who don't have a uterus.

I dont know about you guys, but I thought the bravest, most courageous moment of the #DemDebate was when Julian Castro defended a transgender woman's right to have an abortion.

Julian Castro, in an attempt to bring in the trans community, incorrectly states that "trans females" can have abortions. Trans women are biologically men. https://t.co/5JoDm5Pg6l

Apparently Julian Castro said he supports MEN who identify as WOMEN having abortions. We need to shut this debate down for an immediate biology lesson. https://t.co/tfbMjtEzUb

Greg at Twitchy documented many more reactions here.
Castro was clearly proud of his answer, as he tweeted out video of it later in the evening:
The right to an abortion is under assault. Just because a woman or someone in the trans community is poor doesn't mean they shouldn't have the right to an abortion. I would appoint federal judges who would respect Roe v. Wade. #DemDebate pic.twitter.com/UgkB7IJbhb

It’s quite possible Castro was referring to transgender MEN, as they are women who identify as men and can still have a baby, depending on where they are in the transition process.
But that’s not what he said so, you know, we have lots of questions on this matter.
