Coral Springs Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer Bowen was found dead in her home Wednesday morning, and her husband was taken into custody in a case police say is being investigated as domestic violence.
Officers arrived around 10 a.m. for a welfare check at her Broward County residence, and after gaining entrance to her house, they found her body. Authorities then arrested her husband, Stephen Bowen. Police have not released the cause of death or confirmed what charges, if any, have been filed.
Police have not said what triggered the welfare check or how long she had been dead before officers arrived. Authorities have also not said whether anyone else was present at the home at the time, or what led officers to focus on her husband following the discovery.
Police Chief Brad Mock addressed the case later in the day.
"The incident is being investigated as a domestic violence case and there are no other suspects or threats to the community."
Metayer Bowen, 38, was serving as vice mayor and had just been reelected to the Coral Springs City Commission in 2024. She also played a critical role in Haitian American voter engagement within the Florida Democratic Party.
Democrat Rep. Jared Moskowitz (FL-23) said she had been planning to launch a campaign for Congress in the near future and also revealed, sadly, that the politician had just suffered a tragedy in her own family.
I’m in shock. I was just with her on Saturday. She just buried her brother. She was about to announce she was running for Congress. Nancy was one of the nicest people I worked with. Always fighting for her community, always pushing to help. She had such a future. This is terrible https://t.co/rjWaFneQN7

Coral Springs officials described the heartbreaking loss to the wider Florida community during a press conference.
"Nancy was our battle buddy. She had a good heart. She truly cared about people even when people were saying some of the most horrible things about her and us. She still cared, rolled up her sleeves, went to every event that she could go to."
Metayer Bowen was the first Black and Haitian American woman elected to the Coral Springs commission, a milestone city officials highlighted after her reelection. Her work in local government and party organizing had raised her profile beyond Coral Springs in recent years.
She had also built a record of environmental and community-focused work, along with recognition from organizations focused on public service and advocacy. Those roles helped establish her standing within both local government and party leadership circles.
Family members remembered her as a public servant focused on community work and outreach, while local officials mourned a colleague whose role in city leadership had continued to grow.
Police have not said where Stephen Bowen is being held or when additional details will be released. Investigators have also not provided a timeline beyond the initial welfare check or clarified what evidence led to the arrest.
Police have confirmed a domestic violence investigation and made an arrest, but have not yet explained how a sitting vice mayor died inside her own home.
