Oh, Hey, Check Out Those Gas Prices

One of the big things we kept hearing about in the wake of the Republicans losing the House and the Senate was "gas prices."

Yes, gas prices were higher after going into Iran. But were voters really going to trade a temporary situation for Democrats who had driven gas prices up much higher and had so many other extreme positions? That's the result of all this — more people in power who are going to want to dismantle America as we know it.

Guess what's happening in the immediate wake of the election?

I noticed after the election was a perceptible drop in my gas prices in Texas. It had been running at $3.68 per gallon on average just before the election. It was suddenly $3.31 at my local pump on November 6. I saw others noting a drop as well, even in California.

Suddenly we're seeing reports about gas coming down.

Patrick De Haan, a petroleum expert at price-tracking firm GasBuddy, told CBS News that he expects the national average for gas, which the price-tracking firm put at $4.06 a gallon on Thursday, to dip below the $4 threshold by next week. He also predicted diesel could fall below $6 a gallon by Thanksgiving.

There it is on Sunday:

Oh. Guess what the media also acknowledged now?

Gas and diesel prices have both dropped in recent weeks. [....]

"Oil prices have been falling in the run-up to the election," he said. "My read is because there was optimism that after the midterms these problems would be addressed."

Other factors are also putting downward pressure on fuel costs. Oil tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has picked up, easing constraints on global oil supply, De Haan said.

Oh. You mean that thing we've been reporting that not a lot of other media have been reporting? CENTCOM and President Donald Trump had been saying that traffic through the Strait had largely cleared, so prices would be coming down.

The Trump team had also been working to get it lower.

The Trump administration has used various tools to ease gas prices. That includes expanding access to tax-free red-dyed diesel, opening the door to Russian diesel imports, and waiving what's known as the Jones Act, a federal statute that requires goods shipped between U.S. ports to be moved on ships that are U.S.-built, U.S.-flagged and U.S.-crewed.

Seasonal shifts are also a factor, as it tends to drop in the winter with fewer road trips and switching to winter-blend gas, which costs less to produce. Oh, and it sounds like they were marking things up too.

Tom Kloza, chief energy adviser for Gulf Oil, predicts that the average U.S. gas price will sink below $4 within the next 10 days. The profit gas stations earn on each gallon of gas sold — currently around 75 cents per gallon — is also larger than usual.

"Historically, that is too outsized," he said in an email. "A more normal markup would be 40 cents a gallon, and that means that even if futures prices and physical markets hang around present levels, we should see lower pump prices for the foreseeable future."

So it's down, and, at least at this moment, it looks like it's going to keep going down. That's good for all of us.

But, unfortunately, now, we've traded that temporary gas high for a very big problem with extremists that will not be so easy to get out from under, and that is going to hurt us for years to come.

The Democrats have been emboldened. We're already seeing the Democrats not talking about affordability, but talking about lawfare and who they can go after, including companies who may have had the temerity to work with the Trump administration. They are especially targeting Elon Musk. We're going to see God knows how much money being tossed out the window in an effort to get people. The prospective new Speaker of the House, Hakeem Jeffries (NY-08), is already saying he will not work with the White House, and he's already threatened the new Chief of Staff, Stephen Miller.

So much for doing anything productive.
