CNN's senior data analyst, Harry Enten, had a bit of a surprise on Thursday about President Donald Trump's numbers.
"I think what we’re seeing right now in the numbers is President Trump and the Republican Party are chipping away at the long-term advantage that Democrats have had with black voters, with African-Americans," Enten said.
Trump's GOP is holding on to the generational gains they made with Black voters in the 2024 election.

The GOP has gained 12 pts on the Dems on party id with African Americans vs. Trump term 1 at this point.

He explained how Trump had been at 12 percent with black voters, "He’s gaining — he’s gaining ground with African-Americans. He’s up to 16 percent at this point."
One has to think that these numbers are going to make Democrats very nervous. And they would be right to be nervous.
Enten explained that this could have major implications, especially for elections in the South, in states like Georgia.
"This could have major ramifications and help put Republicans over the top in several Southern places," he said.
CNN host Kate Bolduan asked if this was a broader trend. Enten replied that it absolutely was.
"Donald Trump’s Republican Party is absolutely gaining ground, not just him gaining in terms of his approval rating," he added.
"This, to me, was absolutely stunning," Enten continued. "Look at this party ID margin among African-Americans at this point in Trump's term number one: Democrats had a 63-point advantage. That is absolutely fallen. Look at where it is now: a double-digit shift away."
Black voters identifying as Democrats dropped to 51%, a decrease of 12 percentage points from the president's first term. That lead was the smallest party ID advantage Democrats had among black voters since 2006 through 2021, according to Enten.
Emten delivered a gut punch to the Democrats. "All of a sudden, there are several African-Americans who are walking away from the Democratic Party and a number of them who are walking into the Republican tent," he stated.
Enten explained that the Democrats' numbers with black voters were the lowest in a generation in 2024, and the Democrats hadn't gained back any of the ground since then. Or to flip it, the "Donald Trump Republican Party" has made gains with black voters not seen in a generation, according to Enten.
People got how significant this was.
A big deal 👇👇👇 https://t.co/aRo3eIdklK

As we've seen before, part of it is how crazy the Democrats have gotten — they've left their voters with the things they are supporting, like blocking regular people trying to get to work with a protest. Everyone must bend to what they want. You matter not.
In part, this is happening because of detached-from-reality, entitled behavior like this from leftists: https://t.co/yRJgbRJNKP pic.twitter.com/IkztlgnVY0

Is it any wonder people would leave them and not support how radical the Democrats have become?
