Howard Lutnick Crushes Kristen Welker's Questions About Elon and DOGE With Happy Enthusiasm

President Donald Trump held a meeting with his Cabinet secretaries and Elon Musk the other day.

As we reported, the media immediately pitched it as divisive, claiming there was disagreement between Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Musk. Trump immediately scotched that story, saying he was there so he should know what went down in the meeting. Some of the media wanted to paint it as somehow Trump curtailing Musk. But it was always true that Musk could only make recommendations, and it's up to the White House or the secretaries to do the actual cutting.

That didn't stop NBC's Kristen Welker from going down that road on "Meet The Press," and asking Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick the dumb question, "Who is in charge of your agency -- you or Elon Musk?"

Lutnick dealt with it well, saying that Trump made clear Musk is Lutnick's "partner." Guess that just destroyed the myth that he was curtailing Musk.

"That is what we'd like," Lutnick said, killing the division story and showing great enthusiasm about working with Elon.

You have the greatest businessman and greatest technologist in the world as my partner. You got to ask me, what do I think? Thank God I would have Elon Musk come and help me! There's no one watching this TV right now who if Elon Musk said he was going to come over to their house and help them wouldn't like cheer! We have the best technologist and the richest guy in the world saying 'I'll help you,' Come on! We want his help.

I'm not sure what Welker or the media thinks is going on here. If Musk's DOGE team is having to review all the the agencies, then yes, he has to work with them and make recommendations -- how else would you do it? And they get to weigh in with their specialized knowledge. That's how it should work; it's a cooperative endeavor. And it's the first time maybe that we've even seen such an effort to take on the huge mess that the burgeoning government has become.

Lutnick had to explain the reality of how things work in response to a very silly question. He's so good at politely smacking that down with a happy smile.

What the media should be doing is calling out and doing stories on all the waste, fraud, and abuse that DOGE and the new secretaries are finding. They should be asking why the Democrats are fighting against this effort. But the media is largely ignoring all of that.

Elon liked it.

One of the things I'm seeing in the Trump team is nice -- that they do all seem to be supportive of each other, and in general working toward the common goals that Trump has set forth. When you see one commenting on X or in the media, for example, others chime in, in support, like this.

Lutnick is also very happy to be there; he had one of the most enthusiastic confirmations I think I may have ever seen.

So if the media wants division, they're not getting it. And they're certainly not getting it from Howard Lutnick, who is so happy to be there and doing what he can.
