C'est Ridicule! Macron Vows to Send French Troops to Greenland at 'Denmark's Request'

Spoiler: this article is not a piece from the satire site, The Babylon Bee — although it could be.

So before we get to the issue at hand, let's first hop aboard the time machine and revisit a few "highlights" of France's "sterling" military history. You know, just for fun.

While we don't need to revisit WWII and how German dictator Adolf Hitler's army went through France like a hot knife through butter, there are a few more recent examples to ponder:

France refused to participate in the 2003 Iraq War, leading detractors to refer to the French as "cheese-eating surrender monkeys," which originated in a 1995 episode of The Simpsons, only to resurface during the war. French tanks were ridiculed as having backup lights (which wasn't true), as part of the "surrender monkey" thing.

In fairness, France's present-day military is actually formidable.

Also in fairness: Not even the French are arrogant enough to play stupid with the military might of the United States. That said, a famous phrase (and variations of it) attributed to French general, former president, and statesman Charles de Gaulle, sums up the attitude of the country quite nicely:

France has no permanent friends, only permanent interests.

Now, on to the ridiculous story.

French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday announced that France would deploy "land, air, and sea assets" to Greenland, as President Donald Trump continues to mull the acquisition of the world's largest island, which is largely covered by ice and uninhabitable. As Trump correctly warns, both Russia and China have increasingly shown their respective interests in Greenland due to its strategic Arctic location.

In what appears to be both performative theater and a global publicity stunt, Macron — who, incidentally, I see as a French version of California Gov. Gavin Newsom (read: "Hair Gel") — made the announcement following White House meeting between U.S. Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and representatives from Denmark and Greenland.

While the meeting was billed by some in the media as showcasing “cooperation,” it appeared to be a whole lot more like a warning shot from the Trump administration.

Here's Macron on X:

At the request of Denmark, I have decided that France will participate in the joint exercises organised by Denmark in Greenland, Operation Arctic Endurance. The first French military elements have already arrived. Others will follow.

Oh, noes! And "Operation Arctic Endurance"? Against whom or what?

Translated: "The first French military elements are already on their way. Others will follow."

And in a new year address to France's top brass, Macron further said:

France and Europeans must continue, wherever their interests are threatened, to be present without escalation, but uncompromising on respect for territorial sovereignty.

Would it be a cheap shot to suggest that, if not for the United States — in two world wars — France would have zero "territorial sovereignty" about which to worry? So be it.

In related news on Wednesday, Trump reaffirmed his stance that acquiring Greenland is essential to U.S. national security interests:

The United States needs Greenland for the purpose of National Security. It is vital for the Golden Dome that we are building. NATO should be leading the way for us to get it. IF WE DON’T, RUSSIA OR CHINA WILL, AND THAT IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN! Militarily, without the vast power of the United States, much of which I built during my first term, and am now bringing to a new and even higher level, NATO would not be an effective force or deterrent - Not even close! They know that, and so do I. NATO becomes far more formidable and effective with Greenland in the hands of the UNITED STATES.
Anything less than that is unacceptable. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DJT

I'll just leave that where it is — but I do agree with the president.

"This year will be a test of credibility in many ways, and we are ready," Macron said.

Macron was right about a test of France's credibility — for all the wrong reasons. Imagine that.
