The Irrational Rationale of 'Myside Bias' on the Left, and Its Impact on the Intractable Democrat Party

While the U.S. political system is, by design, adversarial, the Democrat Party has for years — beginning with its dismissive treatment of President Ronald Reagan and worsening since — embraced an irrational rationale that Republicans, conservatism, and President Donald Trump (the three are not necessarily mutually inclusive) are heartless, while the Republican Party believes the left is simply wrong about virtually everything it pushes.

As for "myside bias," it's a real thing. Spoiler: If you don't believe it exists, you have it.

Put simply, myside bias occurs when one evaluates information in a way that supports his or her existing beliefs or opinions, regardless of objective evidence to the contrary. Hence, predisposed bias — be it on a personal, business, or political basis — isn't always a good thing; despite protestations to the contrary in some quarters.

I'll even go a step further:

Predisposed bias — let's call it "contempt before investigation" — can be a destructive force, particularly when objectivity is its first casualty. Bias is generally caused by a mix of psychological, social, cultural, and last but not least, political factors — vs. facts, data, history, logic, or common sense.

Otherwise "normal" people tend to gravitate to news reports, political commentary, and social media content that supports or enforces what they already believe, while the mere thought of watching, say, Fox News if you're a fan of CNN or MSNBC, is anathema. And the same thing is true on the flip side: if a Fox News viewer tunes in to CNN or MSNBC, just for grins, his or her head is sure to explode within minutes. Trust me; been there, done that.

So How in the World Did We Get Here?

While the left's real insanity arrived with Donald Trump in June 2015, after he and wife Melania rode down the famous "golden elevator" in Trump Tower to announce his 2016 presidential campaign — which was quickly followed by Trump Derangement Syndrome — the GOP didn't exactly embrace the prior presidency of Barack Obama, arguably the most intentionally divisive president in modern presidential history.

In other words, the present-day battle was first joined in earnest when Trump first took office — after eight years of Obama.

Trump was swept into office in 2016 by disillusioned voters, many of whom voted as much against Democrat presidential nominee Hillary Clinton as for Trump. Trump was everything the Democrats hated: a brash, pro-business billionaire who railed against the Democrat Party and the ways of Washington, D.C., which the electorate ate up. Many if not most of the same people still do.

Now, nine years later, Trump Derangement Syndrome has never been stronger (or weaker, as it were), and the Democrat Party — which is devoid of ideas and policies — remains obsessed with trashing Trump at every concocted opportunity.

The result, as my headline suggests, is that the Democrats and their self-proclaimed "party of the people" continue to swirl down the toilet of public opinion, while Trump — who has not been without missteps since his inauguration — continues to ride a wave of public approval that hovers around 50 percent.

Hence, the Democrat Party continues to come unglued like no time in modern history — ever growing more irrational, rationalizing about all things Trump and why his policies are bad, dangerous, yet another "constitutional crisis," or "all of the above."

In my not-so-humble opinion, the Democrat Party's continuing self-destruction boils down to three categories.

Democrat 'Purity' Over Pragmatism

Progressive activists are fond of pushing uncompromising policies on the rest of us, like sweeping, irrational, climate "reforms," universal healthcare (government healthcare), and the disaster of defunding the police —regardless of public opposition.

While I imagine most of the supporters of any of the above are driven more by emotion than facts, they also alienate moderate voters.

In the 2024 election, we saw an unprecedented crossover of Democrat voters, including minorities, crossing party lines in support of Trump — rather than risk four more years of a Democrat president in the White House. We now see the same response as anti-ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) activists riot in Los Angeles and elsewhere in support of illegal aliens, which is intolerable to the sane among us. Yet it continues.

Science, Evidence, and Facts

While the left has long claimed the mantle of scientific evidence (ridiculous on its face), liberals continue to dismiss everything from the disastrous economic impact of rent controls, economically unsupportable minimum wage levels, and inheritable levels of intelligence. And, a quick conversation with a Democrat on any of these issues or others reveals a woeful level of facts or data to support their beliefs.

Perception of Moral Superiority

Ahh, my favorite.

The left's penchant for self-proclaimed moral superiority — let's call it moral absolutism, Democrat-style — has a long, hypocritical history. This is one of many areas in which the left views its beliefs and narratives as "non-negotiable."

In the warped minds of the left, the on-demand murder of a viable unborn child is a "women's rights" or "women's healthcare" issue. Male athletes pretending to be females beating the snot out of female athletes in female sport events is an example of "equal rights for all 'women.'" Opposition to millions of illegal aliens streaming across the Southern Border, many of them violent and dangerous, is tantamount to "bigotry" or "racism."

The list goes on — and if you (third-person) disagree with any of the left's insanity, you must be dismissed, discredited, or ultimately destroyed, if necessary.

The Impact on the Democrat Party

Anyone who pays a modicum of attention to the state of today's Democrat Party clearly sees intentional alienation of (what stands for) "moderates," or reasonable alternatives within the party, internal division over the direction of the party after its humiliating defeat in the 2024 general election, and perhaps worst of all (for Democrats, that is), policy paralysis, as Democrat lawmakers continue to obsess over all things "evil" about Trump and his policies.

After all, hating Trump is a full-time job — and irrational rationalization is a fool's game.
