Trump Has Incredible Response to Fauci's Testimony

President Donald Trump has weighed in on the testimony of Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's top COVID doctor who somehow outlasted Trump's first term.

Despite being forewarned about the legal dangers, Dr. Fauci repeatedly invoked his purported Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination at the hearing. 111 times.

Trump was asked about the preemptive pardon given to Fauci by former President Joe Biden, and he gave a somewhat surprising response.

“So, he was pardoned by Biden, and I respect that," he said. "I know how powerful it is.”

“The only thing I know that he signed was Hunter Biden’s pardon, but I’m not sure that he signed— he probably didn’t sign this one," Trump added. "So, I can’t tell you what the law is. I’ve heard that you have to have a lot of proof, you need to have letters, you need to have all sorts of things that the person operating the auto pen has to know exactly what it’s all about. He didn’t know what it was about,” Trump said.

“Maybe there’s something on the auto pen," he continued. "Other than that, the power of pardon is very powerful.”

There may be an angle to President Trump's answer. You see, the Senate will be voting on contempt of Congress charges against Fauci next week, according to Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY).

The Fifth Amendment protects against self-incrimination in witness testimony. But as I've explained elsewhere on RedState, Fauci may be guilty of contempt of Congress because he used it inappropriately to shield himself from new charges.

So, Trump may just be ahead of the curve. Unlike Dr. Anthony Fauci.

President Trump did have criticism for Dr. Fauci's testimony beyond commenting on the possible authenticity of Fauci's pardon.

“Well, I watched the whole thing today, but more importantly, I was a part of the whole Fauci-- I inherited Fauci. He was here from the 1980s, so I had him for a period of time, and I disagreed with him on a lot,” Trump said, noting that “I would have had to close down the whole country if I listened to him.”

“I went the Federalist way, which is basically let the governors decide, and generally speaking, the Republican governors did very well. The Democrat governors did not do very well,” Trump continued.

“But Fauci wanted to have nobody wearing masks, if you remember, and then everybody had to wear five masks, as many masks as you could get," he added. "I mean, made a lot of mistakes, and he wasn’t a big factor for me. He was a very big factor for Biden, and if you remember, even though we were sort of prime time in terms of that whole disaster of COVID, far fewer people died in the Trump administration than in the Biden administration.”

Republican House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (KY-01) released a blistering statement on Dr. Anthony Fauci's testimony on Wednesday.

Dr. Fauci is trapped by the many lies he repeatedly told the American public. If former President Biden’s blanket autopen pardon is valid, then Dr. Fauci has no right to refuse to answer questions. The Oversight Committee exposed how the Biden White House abused the autopen, and any actions taken without clear authorization should be deemed null and void. Dr. Fauci clearly knows his autopen pardon is on legally questionable grounds and decided to protect himself today rather than provide the truth to the American people.

Based on the release of Dr. Fauci’s diary, which should have been provided to the House Oversight Committee last Congress but was withheld by then-HHS Secretary Becerra, we’ll be asking Dr. Fauci whether he stands by his previous testimony to our Committee. Dr. Fauci’s actions and lies caused irreparable harm to Americans, and he must face accountability.

Millions of Americans agree that Dr. Anthony Fauci must be held accountable. But can Republicans finally do something besides make hollow promises? We shall see.
