Can an amateur athlete be sent home from the Olympics for being a sour-puss?

Apparently so.

On Monday, the French Olympic ski team announced they were sending home skier Mathieu Faivre from the PyeongChang Winter Olympics. Faivre will be unable to compete in Saturday’s Men’s Alpine event. His crime?

Being a jerk.

After finishing 7th in the giant slalom behind bronze medalist teammate Alexis Pinturault, Faivre told a group of reporters that he didn’t care about the success of his teammates and was only concerned with his own success.

Faivre, who is currently dating U.S. gold medal skier Mikaela Shiffrin, apologized for the comments and tried to clarify his intention.

Via Instagram, he said he only meant to convey the idea that in an individual sport he can’t spend too much time concerned with the results of other skiers.

It seems a shame that along with the pressure and intensity it takes to compete in any sport on an international level, Olympic athletes also need to be measuring their words when being peppered with questions from over-eager reporters. Perhaps Faivre sounded a bit selfish, but no athlete who has been working his entire life for one single moment should be made to pay for awkwardly answering reporters directly reminding him of his failures.
